KINGSVILLE, Texas (Nov. 30, 2019) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team concluded the nonconference schedule with a 92-79 loss to Angelo State University Saturday at the Emerald Beach Thanksgiving Tournament in Kingsville, Texas.
The ThunderWolves will enter Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next weekend with a 2-4 record. Angelo State improved to 5-0 with the win.
The Pack shot 52.8 percent from the field, which included a 64.3 percent effort in the second half, but shot just 20 percent from long range (4-for-20). CSU-Pueblo got to the line 25 times and hit 19 free throws for a 76.0 percentage. Angelo State matched the shooting output and hit on 52.5 percent of its shots from the field. The Rams knocked down nine 3-pointers and went 21-for-27 (77.8%) from the charity stripe. CSU-Pueblo lost the rebounding battle 36-23, which included 11 offensive rebounds by ASU that translated into 15-second chance points. The Pack won the paint 40-36.
Guard
David Simental (R-So., Pueblo West, Colo.) led the Pack with 24 points. He went 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the field and was a cool 9-for-10 (90%) from the free throw line.
Senior guard
Brandon McGhee (Oakland, Calif.) was the only other player in double figures, as he dropped 20 points on 9-for-13 (69.2%) shooting from the field. He led the team with seven rebounds and also had a team-best three assists.
The Pack scored the first five points of the game on a
Jason Anderson (Sr., C, Colorado Springs, Colo.) jumper and a
Donovan Oldham (Sr., F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) 3-pointer. A layup by Simental handed the ThunderWolves a 7-2 advantage just two minutes into the contest.
The Rams responded with an 8-0 run in 1:04 of game clock to take their first lead of the game at 10-7. A Simental 3-pointer stopped the run and tied the game 10-10. Unfortunately for the Pack, ASU recorded another 8-0 stretch and was ahead 18-10 with 10:38 left to play in the first half.
CSU-Pueblo got within six on two occasions, but Angelo State pushed the pedal down and led by as many as 20 before settling with an 18-point halftime advantage at 49-31.
The Ram lead was diminished to 11 on multiple occasions in the second half, but that would be as close as the ThunderWolves would get in the 13-point loss, 92-79.
The ThunderWolves stay on the road to open RMAC play, as the Pack travels to Adams State University and Fort Lewis College, Dec. 6-7, respectfully.
