Pack and Coach Hammer grab first conference win in RMAC opener

ALAMOSA, Colo. (Dec. 6, 2019) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team had five players score in double figures to secure a 72-60 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory at Adams State University, Friday in Alamosa, Colorado. 
 
The ThunderWolves (3-4, 1-0 RMAC) won their conference opener and handed Head Coach Matt Hammer his first league victory as the head coach. 
 
The Pack shot 51.8 percent from the field and allowed the Grizzlies (2-5, 0-1 RMAC) to shoot 36.5 percent, as CSU-Pueblo snapped a four-game losing skid. The ThunderWolves won the paint, both on the boards and in the scoring column with a 40-27 advantage in rebounding and a 36-28 margin on points in the paint. The Pack knocked down nine 3-pointers and were 8-for-10 (80%) from the free throw line. 
 
Four of the five starters scored in double figures, guided by guard David Simental's (R-So., Pueblo West, Colo.) 18 points. He shot 8-for-14 (57.1%) from the field and went 2-of-4 from long range. He added four rebounds. 
 
Senior guard Brandon McGhee (Oakland, Calif.) had 12 points on 5-of-9 (55.6%) shooting from the field and also had four boards. 
 
Junior Bryce Sanchious (F, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had 10 points and brought down 13 rebounds to record his first double-double as a member of the Pack. He also added a game-high two steals. 
 
Sophomore Tyson Gilbert (G, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) totaled 10 points, brought down seven rebounds and dished out a team-high four assists.
 
Off the bench, freshman Jaedon Bowles (F, Aurora, Colo.) shot 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the field, hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws to record 13 points in 15 minutes. 
 
Adams State scored the first basket and led 8-4 with 15:41 remaining in the first half. The Pack got things rolling with a 6-0 run to take their first lead at 10-8. CSU-Pueblo continued their run and pushed its lead to 16-10 on back-to-back 3-pointers from Sanchious. The ThunderWolves wouldn't let the lead go the rest of the way.
 
A lay-up by McGhee with 7:46 remaining handed the Pack their largest lead of the half at 22-11. The advantage dropped down to four before reaching seven at 32-25 at the half. 
 
CSU-Pueblo's advantage was six at 34-28 two minutes into the second half, but the Pack pushed the lead to 13 at 41-28. The advantage never dipped below nine and reached a high point of 24 on multiple occasions, with the first happening on a dunk by Sanchious to give the road team a 58-34 lead with 8:26 left.
 
ASU put a run together late, but the Pack lead was too great and the ThunderWolves came away with the 12-point victory. 
 
The ThunderWolves close out a six-game road trip Saturday at Fort Lewis College (6-1, 0-1 RMAC) beginning at 7:30 p.m.
