Pack grounds Skyhawks for 2nd consecutive sweep

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 11, 2019) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball toppled Fort Lewis College in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 27-25) sweep Friday at Massari Arena.
 
Facing the prospect of a fourth set, freshman Diamond'Nique Young (Fr., Fresno, Calif.) took over the match. Down 22-18 in the third set, Young had four kills and a block in the final 10 points to lead the Pack to a 27-25 win in the third set. Young had seven kills in the third set alone.
 
For the match, Young hit .533, her best hitting percentage in match this season. She shared the team-lead with 11 kills.  Young also batted down three blocks.
 
Brooke Schilling (Jr., Platteville, Colo.) matched Young with 11 kills including six in the first set.  Schilling dropped in a pair of aces and added a pair of blocks.
 
Jazzy Espinoza (So., Cheyenne, Wyo.) led the Pack with six blocks. Espinoza landed two aces and four kills. Kyle Meltzer (Jr., Fort Collins, Colo.) and Sam Novak (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) also had two aces each.
 
Grace Hern (So., Omaha, Neb.) dished out 22 assists. Kelsey Bell (Sr., Los Lunas, N.M.) had 11 assists for the Pack.
 
Sarah Vang (Sr., Parker, Colo.) anchored the Pack's defense with 13 digs.  This was Vang's third double-digit dig performance of the season.
 
The Pack used four 3-0 runs to roll to a 25-18 win in set one. Schilling had six kills in the first set.  The ThunderWolves hit .405 in the opening frame.
 
CSU-Pueblo started the second set on an 8-2 run. They never looked back, winning set two 25-16.
 
Fort Lewis took its first multi-point lead of the match in the third set. They used a 5-0 run to jump in front 16-13. They led 22-20 before Young took over.
 
Nevertheless, Fort Lewis had two chances at set point. Young responded with a kill and a block to force extra points. After a Skyhawk kill, Fort Lewis once again had a chance to win the set and once again, a Young kill tied the set. Two tough serves from Meltzer iced the Skyhawks and clinched the sweep for the Pack.
 
After their second consecutive sweep, the Pack stands 7-9 overall. They hold a 5-3 record in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Skyhawks fell to 5-11 (1-6 RMAC).
 
The Pack will wrap up its four-match homestand Saturday when they face rival Adams State University at 5 p.m. at Massari Arena.
