Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pack close tough road trip with loss to Yellow Jackets

SPEARFISH, S.D. (Jan. 26, 2019) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team closed a tough four-game road swing with a 94-79 loss at Black Hills State University Saturday.

The ThunderWolves (5-14, 3-10 RMAC) shot 41.2 percent from the field and allowed the Yellow Jackets (9-8, 8-5 RMAC) to post a 51.7 percentage. CSU-Pueblo got to the line and attempted 11 more free throws than BHSU, as it went 27-of-34 (79.4%) from the charity stripe. The Pack forced 16 turnovers and produced 19 points off those miscues. The ThunderWolves lost the rebounding battle 38-24, which included nine offensive boards the Yellow Jackets turned into 18 second chance points.

For the second straight night, the Pack were led by sophomore Corey Seng (G/F, Highlands Ranch, Colo.). After 14 points Friday, he scored 15 against BHSU and added a team-high eight rebounds. He also led the team with three steals, as he totaled six for the weekend. Seng got to the free throw line 10 times and knocked down seven of those attempts.

Donovan Oldham (R-Jr., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 14 points and shot 57.1 percent from the field. He added four rebounds, two steals and a block.

The 3-ball was dropping for both teams in the first half, as the Yellow Jackets hit eight and the Pack had six. CSU-Pueblo held their largest first half lead of 22-18 with 8:36 remaining in the opening frame, but BHSU would counter and post a 12-2 run during the next 3:36 to create a six-point advantage at 30-24. The home team would push the lead to seven on two occasions and the ThunderWolves battled back to within two twice before the Yellow Jackets would settle for a 42-38 advantage at the halftime buzzer.

After allowing the first three points of the second frame, CSU-Pueblo recorded a 11-3 run to take the 49-48 lead with 16:15 showing on the game clock. The run saw three different players score, as Seng knocked down two 3-pointers and the stretch was capped by three free throws from Jordan Phillips (R-So., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.).

Unfortunately it would be the last lead the Pack would own, as BHSU responded with a 13-4 stretch to open an eight point lead at 61-53 with 13:11 remaining. The ThunderWolves got within three at 65-62 at the midway mark of the half, but would struggle down the stretch to suffer their fifth straight loss.

The Pack return home Feb. 1-2 to host No. 23 Colorado School of Mines and University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Both contests are set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
