SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 14, 2018) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team suffered a 95-89 overtime road loss in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at Westminster College Friday in Salt Lake City.
The ThunderWolves (2-8, 0-4 RMAC) held the lead at the half for the third straight game, but couldn't hold on to suffer their sixth straight loss. The Pack knocked down 14 3-pointers, while the Griffins (4-4, 2-2 RMAC) hit 10. CSU-Pueblo shot 55.2 percent from the field in the first half, but would finish the game hitting on 45.6 percent of their attempts. WC was the opposite, shooting 44.4 percent in the first frame and finishing with a 51.6 percentage, which included going 5-for-6 (83.3%) in the overtime session. The ThunderWolves tied a season-low with just eight turnovers and tied in the rebounding category 38-38.
Senior
Gavin Liggett (G, Limon, Colo.) dropped 24 points on eight 3-pointers in 40 minutes.
Freshman
Tyson Gilbert (G, Highland Ranch, Colo.) filled the stat sheet with a near triple double, as he posted 16 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals with zero turnovers.
Sophomore
Corey Seng (G/F, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) recorded his first double of his career with 17 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman
Cade Carrol (F, Buena Visa, Colo.) scored seven of his 12 points in the final five minutes of regulation and added six rebounds.
Donovan Oldham (R-Jr., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) added 11 points and six rebounds after playing in all 45 minutes.
After a back and forth affair for the first eight minutes of the game, Liggett got hot and knocked down three 3-pointers in a matter of 42 seconds of game time. The run handed the Pack a 17-11 lead. The road team's lead was just three at 32-29 with 4:34 remaining, but a Carrol 3-pointer started a 11-2 run that handed the ThunderWolves a 12-point lead at 43-31 with 1:13 left until halftime. Four different players scored in the run. The run guided CSU-Pueblo to a 43-35 lead at the break.
CSU-Pueblo led by as many as 10 and were up 53-44 with 14:55 left, but stalled out at 53 and allowed Westminster to go on an 10-0 run and take a one point lead. Neither team owned a lead more than three points the rest of the regulation. Carrol scored all seven of the Pack's final points and capped his big finish to the frame with a layup with 49 seconds left to tie the game, 75-75. The Pack forced a turnover and had a shot at the end of the game to win it, but it fell short.
It was all the Griffins in the overtime session, as they scored the first six points and built a 12-point lead at 89-77 with 2:12 left. The ThunderWolves got within four at 93-89, but it was too late, as there were only 17 seconds left.
The Pack will close the road trip and the 2018 calendar year at Dixie State University Saturday in St. George starting at 7:30 p.m.
