Turnovers spoil strong effort in 68-60 loss to Rogers State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Nov. 10, 2018) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team suffered a 68-60 loss to Rogers State University Saturday at the Wichita Falls Conference Challenge. 

The story for the ThunderWolves (1-1) was the 19 turnovers, which equated to 23 points (14 on the fast break) for the Hillcats. CSU-Pueblo created seven RSU turnovers, but only totaled four points off those miscues. The two teams recorded about the same number of shots, thanks to a 17-8 advantage in offensive rebounds for the Pack, which turned into 15 second chance points. 

The ThunderWolves shot 36 percent from the field, while Rogers State hit on 42 percent. CSU-Pueblo struggled in the second half after shooting 48 percent in the first 20 minutes, the Pack hit on 24.1 percent in the final frame.

Donovan Oldham (R-Jr., G/F, Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the team with 18 points, all of which came in the first half. He added six rebounds and a team-high four assists with two blocks. He knocked down half of his shots (8-for-16) and made two of the five 3-pointers for the team. 

Sophomore Corey Seng (G/F, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added 14 points and six rebounds (five on the offensive glass). Guard Jordan Phillips (R-So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted his first double-double with the ThunderWolves, as he scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. 

Freshman Cade Carrol (Buena Vista, Colo.) also gathered 11 rebounds and added eight points off the bench. Junior Harvey Barr (Southampton, England, UK) played in 13 minutes off the bench and compiled seven points, four blocks and three rebounds. 

The contest was tied on eight occasions and the lead changed five times. Both teams' largest lead was eight with CSU-Pueblo's coming midway through the first half. The Pack's last lead came in the first minute of the second half, while the Hillcats were able to push the lead to eight on multiple occasions.

With 5:47 remaining in the game, Rogers State's advantage was eight at 60-52, but the ThunderWolves would post an 8-0 run during the next two minutes of game time to knot the contest at 60-60. Six of the eight points came at the charity stripe, four from Seng. 

Unfortunately, the Pack wouldn't score the rest of the game due to three turnovers and putting up three shots. CSU-Pueblo only gave up two points until there were 36 seconds left. RSU went 4-for-4 at line in the final seconds and added a dunk with a second left to cap off the win. 

CSU-Pueblo will open the home portion of the season Nov. 16-17 with the 35th Annual Al Kaly Shrine Classic. The ThunderWolves play at 7 p.m. both evenings against Midwestern State University and Wayland Baptist University, respectfully.
