Streaking Skyhawks survive struggle with Pack

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 26, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball  could not cool the Fort Lewis Skyhawks who won in four sets (25-23, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23) Friday at Massari Arena.

Page Heller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) delivered 31 digs for the Pack. Heller now has 471 digs on the season. This total ranks as the fourth-highest single-season total in program history. Heller also handed out four assists.

Reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week Brooke Schilling (So., Platteville, Colo.) continued her hot streak. Schilling recorded 19 kills for a 4.75 kills per set average. She added 16 digs and hit .190. Schilling now has 11 double-doubles on the season.

Berkley Hays (Fr., Dallas, Texas) rejected five Skyhawks attacks. Hays matched a school record with four solo blocks. She also knocked down 12 kills and hit .270 for the match.

Freshman, Grace Hern (Omaha, Neb.) dealt out 47 assists. Hern had 13 digs to earn her 10th double-double of the season. She also put down an ace.

Grace Miles (So., Parker, Colo.) crushed down 13 kills. Miles hit .179 with six digs.

ShiAnn Rodriguez (R-So., Pueblo, Colo.) collected 10 digs. Rodriguez also had a kill on two attacks for a .500 hitting percentage.

Sam Novak (Fr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) finished with nine digs. Mallorie Post (So., Federal Way, Wash.) and Maddy Wisniewski (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each had three blocks. 

The first set stayed close throughout. Fort Lewis broke a 20-20 tie with a 3-0 run. The Pack would fend off game point twice, but the Skyhawks eventually pulled out a 25-23 win. Schilling had six kills in the first set.

Set two belonged to the Pack. A 6-1 run gave CSU-Pueblo a 12-5 lead. The Skyhawks battled back within four twice, but the Pack would roll to a 25-17 set win. Miles had six kills in the second set.

A 4-0 run gave the Skyhawks a 6-3 lead early. The Pack bounced back with a 4-0 swing that put them in front 10-8. With the Pack holding a 17-16 edge, Fort Lewis unleashed a 6-0 run that put them back in front to stay. They won set three 25-20.

The Pack used a 3-0 run to tie set three at 18. Fort Lewis used a 3-0 run of its own to make it 21-18. The Pack clawed back within one at 24-23. However, the Skyhawks would clinch the win with one last point to make it 25-23.

Fort Lewis has won eight of its last 10 matches. They are 9-11 overall with a 9-7 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Pack stands 5-20 (3-13 RMAC).

The Pack will play its final home match Saturday when the ThunderWolves welcome Adams State University to Massari Arena. First serve on senior night is set for 7 p.m.
