Upset-minded Pack forces five sets vs. favored DSU

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 19, 2018) – Colorado State University-Pueblo Volleyball gave Dixie State University all it could handle Friday night at Massari Arena but the Trailblazers rallied to win in five sets, 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 12-15).

Brooke Schilling (So., Platteville, Colo.) knocked down a match-high 20 kills. She also collected 12 digs to earn her ninth double-double of the season. Schilling hit .292, her second-highest hitting percentage of the season. She also dropped in a service ace.

Grace Hern (Fr., Omaha, Neb.) reached the 50-assist plateau for the third time this season with 51 helpers. Hern also notched 13 digs for her third straight double-double. She now has 10 double-doubles on the season. 

Libero Page Heller (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.) secured 26 digs. Heller put down three aces. She had four assists.  Heller now has 421 digs on the season.

ShiAnn Rodriguez (R-So., Pueblo, Colo.) earned 11 digs in her first home match in over  a month. Rodriguez also had a kill.

Maddy Wisniewski (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) spiked nine kills. Wisniewski had six digs and three blocks. Berkley Hays (Fr., Dallas, Texas) also achieved three blocks.  Hays added eight kills.

Grace Miles (So., Parker, Colo.) smacked down 12 kills. She had five digs.

A close first set, saw the Pack score three consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead. They would hold on to claim a 25-23 set win. Schilling and Wisniewski each had five kills in the first set.

The Trailblazers responded with a 6-1 run to start set two. CSU-Pueblo could not claw any closer than three as Dixie State rolled to a 25-20 win in set two.

In set three, the Pack used a five-point run to jump in front 5-1. The Trailblazers tied the stanza at seven. They would a 5-1 run of their own to take a 15-11 lead. The Pack tied the set at 16. After each team scored three points, the Pack unleashed a six-point surge with Wisniewski serving to close out the set 25-19.

Dixie State used a 4-1 run to take a 19-15 lead in set four. The Pack closed within one at 23-22, but the Trailblazers scored the last two points of the frame to force a fifth set.

The Pack embarked on a 5-0 run to take a 10-6 lead. Heller had two aces during this swing. The Trailblazers rallied. Down 11-7, they scored seven consecutive points to put the Pack's back against the ropes. CSU-Pueblo fought off one match point, but Dixie State would close them out 15-12 in the final game.

The Trailblazers improved to 17-4 with a 12-2 mark in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Pack fell to 2-12 in conference play and 4-19 overall.

CSU-Pueblo will continue its four-match homestand Saturday when the ThunderWolves host Westminster College at 7 p.m. at Massari Arena. Saturday's match will be the Pack's annual Think Pink match presented by St. Mary Corwin Medical Center. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Saturday's showdown with the Griffins.
