GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (April 30, 2016) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team eliminated its third opponent from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday after defeating Chadron State 4-1 in Grand Junction, Colo. at the CMU Softball Field.
Sarah DiTommaso (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif.) led the Pack offensively, hitting two solo homeruns in the game.
CSU-Pueblo, playing as the designated home team, scored the games' first run in the first at-bat on an RBI-single hit by Lexie Martindale (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) with two outs in the inning, taking advantage of two walks issued in the frame.
Pack starting pitcher Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) was effective from the start against a potent Eagles lineup, leaving four runners on base in the first two innings without any runs scored.
With one out in the bottom of the second, DiTommaso smacked her first homerun of the year, a solo shot to centerfield for a 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Wolfe and Co. hit some turbulence as the first two runners reached safely but a strong defensive showing got the Pack out of the inning without any runs crossing the plate.
After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Wolfe escaped the fifth inning allowing the first two hitters to reach safely with no runs crossing the plate.
Catcher Michaela Burpee (Fr., Union City, Calif.) led off the home half of the sixth hitting her sixth homer of the year to centerfield immediately followed by DiTommaso's second solo shot of the game, building a 4-0 Pack lead.
In the final at-bat for the Eagles, Wolfe surrendered one run on two hits in closing out the game, improving to 7-8 on the season.
Facing RMAC Pitcher of the Year in Chadron's Tayler Hall, the ThunderWolves tabbed the hurler for four runs on nine hits including three solo homeruns, dropping her record to 16-3.
Wolfe went the distance allowing one run, scattering nine hits, finishing with three strikeouts and one walk issued.
With the win CSU-Pueblo (21-30) moves on in the tournament and will play either No. 20 Colorado Mesa or MSU Denver Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at CMU Softball Field.
