PUEBLO, Colo. (April 10, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team completed a four-game series sweep of Adams State Sunday as the Pack won game one against the Grizzlies 11-2 in six innings followed up by a 9-2 victory in the series finale.
Pack freshman Michaela Burpee (Union City, Calif.) went a combined 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two walks in two games leading the Pack offensively.
In game one Adams State scored the games' first run in the first at bat on a solo shot to right.
CSU-Pueblo offense came alive in the third inning as four runs crossed the plate highlighted by a three-run bomb off the bat of Dora Hernandez (Sr., Benton City, Wash.), her second of the season giving the Pack a 4-1 lead through three.
Nicole Montoya (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) also connected an RBI-single in the inning.
The offense continued over the next three innings for the Pack, scoring three runs in the fourth and fifth inning combined before another big scoring output in the home half of the sixth inning.
CSU-Pueblo plated four more runs in the sixth on an RBI-single from Kennedy Smith (Jr., Fillmore, Calif.) along with a three-run blast by Burpee sealed the 11-2 run-ruled victory in six innings.
Pack starting pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) went the distance scattering six hits and allowed two runs, one earned while striking out five to improve to 8-15 on the season.
In the series finale the ThunderWolves used a seven-run fifth inning to take their first lead of the ballgame 7-2.
The enormous scoring inning came on four hits while the Pack capitalized on two defensive errors from the Grizzlies.
Designated player Lexie Martindale (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) hit a two-run double down the right field line along with a walk, hit batsman and another RBI hit by Burpee put the game out of reach.
CSU-Pueblo added two more runs in the sixth on RBI-singles by Morgan Hatfield (Fr., Upland, Calif.) and Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) for the 9-2 lead.
ThunderWolves' starting pitcher Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) took care of business in the circle, throwing seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits and two strikeouts.
For the series Burpee went 8-for-11 at the plate good for a .727 average including two homeruns, two doubles, nine RBIs and six runs scored. She recorded an outstanding 1.455 slugging percentage while earning a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in twenty putouts.
In the circle Davalos went 2-0 in two complete games allowing three runs on eight hits and nine strikeouts. Her weekend ERA was a stellar 1.64 against the Grizzlies.
Smith and Turney each recorded five hits in the series with Smith hitting three doubles.
CSU-Pueblo (12-29, 11-19 RMAC) hits the road for its final regular season road trip of the season as they travel to Denver, Colo. for a pod series against Fort Lewis College and host-Regis University. The Pack open the weekend Saturday at 11 a.m. against Regis at Lakewood Park.
