PUEBLO, Colo. (March 5, 2016) - Redshirt-freshman Hope Davalos (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) tossed her first career no-hitter in game one versus University of Colorado Colorado Springs en route to a 2-0 victory Saturday before falling 4-3 in game two.
Davalos made quick work of the Mountain Lions, allowing just three walks in seven innings pitched including fanning six batters.
She allowed two of her three free passes in the first two innings before settling down the remainder of the game, letting the defense take care of business.
CSU-Pueblo scored the games first run in the bottom of the first on an RBI-double off the bat of Dora Hernandez (Sr., Benton City, Wash.), scoring Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) who lead off the inning with a base on balls.
The score remained unchanged over the next four innings before the Pack added an insurance run in the bottom half of the fifth when Vivian Ledesma (Fr., Colton, Calif.) hit a line drive toward the second baseman who allowed for the ball to sneak under her glove and roll into the outfield, plating Turney and scoring the second and final run of the ballgame.
The runs proved to be enough as Davalos sat down final six batters to secure the win and improve to 4-7 on the season.
In game two, UCCS scored single runs in four innings and tallied ten hits before a late game rally fell short for the Pack in a 4-3 decision in favor of the Mountain Lions.
CSU-Pueblo scored its first run of the contest in the sixth inning with Turney reaching base via hit by pitch and scoring in the next at bat on an RBI-double by Ledesma broke the scoreless game for the Pack.
Pack pitchers Lexie Martindale (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Shannon Lieber (Jr., Lone Tree, Colo.) each tossed two innings, surrendering one run while Martindale fanned two UCCS hitters.
Davalos was called on in relief to begin the fifth inning and allowed two runs on four hits while striking out four in facing fourteen batters.
In the final at bat CSU-Pueblo center fielder Kennedy Smith (Jr., Fillmore, Calif.) connected her second hit of the game, a double to right centerfield and later scored on another double by Shelby Bennett (Fr., Norco, Calif.).
Bennett crossed the plate for the second run of the inning on an infield hit by Turney.
The game ended on a flyout with the winning run at the plate for the Pack in the 4-3 decision.
CSU-Pueblo (4-17, 3-7 RMAC) concludes its series with the Mountain Lions with another doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. at Rawlings Softball Complex.
