PUEBLO, Colo. (March 13, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team earned a split on the final day of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series against Chadron State and Metro State University of Denver Sunday. The Pack defeated Chadron State 6-3 in game one and fell 11-7 to MSU Denver in the weekend finale.
Dora Hernandez (Sr., Benton City, Wash.), Kennedy Smith (Jr., Fillmore, Calif.), and Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) each collected five hits on the weekend.
Pack pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) went 1-1 in three appearances and added two complete games.
Facing the Eagles of Chadron State in the first game, the teams battled scoreless through 2 1/2 innings before CSU-Pueblo broke the tie with a single run in the home half of the third inning.
Alyssa Ubrun (So., Olympia, Wash.) led off with a walk and scored on an RBI-single down the left field line off the bat of Turney for the single run lead.
Chadron took a 2-1 lead in the fifth, scoring the runs on four hits.
The Pack erupted in the bottom of the sixth, plating five runs highlighted by back-to-back homeruns by Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Ubrun.
Turney added a RBI-bunt single to regain the lead 6-2.
The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the final at bat, scoring a run and bringing the tying run to the plate before Davalos delivered her third strikeout of the game to close the door.
In game two of three on the day, Chadron State fell 2-0 against MSU Denver.
Against the Roadrunners in the Sunday finale, the Pack saw the visiting team jump out to a six run lead in their first two at-bats before the Pack responded with three runs in the home half of the third.
Shortstop Vivian Ledesma (Fr., Colton, Calif.) belted her first career homerun, a two-run blast over the left field wall along with an RBI-single by Turney cut the Roadrunner lead in half at 6-3.
MSU Denver added a run in the sixth with the Pack responding with three runs thanks to a three-run homer by Ubrun, her second of the day, to get the Pack within a single run 7-6.
The Roadrunners scored four runs over the final two innings extending the lead to 11-6.
CSU-Pueblo scored one run in its final attempt but the rally fell short with a final score of 11-7.
Ubrun went 2-for-5 in two games at the plate including hitting two homeruns, gathered four RBIs and two walks.
CSU-Pueblo (6-21, 5-11 RMAC) remains at home to play host to Colorado Mesa University in a four-game RMAC series beginning Saturday at noon at Rawlings Softball Complex.
