SPEARFISH, S.D. (February 27, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team dropped its second doubleheader in as many days versus Black Hills State, falling 9-8 in game one before dropping a 6-5 decision in eight innings in the series finale.
In game one CSU-Pueblo scored its first runs in top of the first off a leadoff double by Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.), scoring on a wild pitch in the next at bat.
Morgan Hatfield (Fr., Upland, Calif.) knocked in the second run of the frame on an RBI groundout.
Black Hills responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first to knot the game at two apiece.
The score went unchanged through three innings before the Pack tallied a run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice flyout off the bat of Alyssa Ubrun (So., Olympia, Wash.) to give the Pack a one-run lead at 3-2.
CSU-Pueblo offense erupted in the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits including a three-run blast by Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) and a two-run shot by Ubrun cushioned the lead 8-2 through four and half innings.
Black Hills cut into the lead with two runs in the home half of the sixth with two hits and a Pack error.
Entering the final at bat and the ThunderWolves leading 8-4, the first five hitters for the Yellow Jackets reached safely, scoring three runs before an out was recorded.
Following a pitching change, BHSU tied the game on a sac flyout before a single up the middle allowed the game winning run to cross the plate in the 9-8 decision.
Pack starting pitcher Hope Davalos (R-Fr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) threw six complete innings, surrendering nine runs on eleven hits allowed.
In the series finale the Pack again scored the first runs of the ballgame in the second inning a two-run shot by Lexie Martindale (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), her first of the season.
The Yellow Jackets took their first lead of the game scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth, stealing a 3-2 lead.
After a scoreless fifth inning, CSU-Pueblo knotted the game at three apiece on a RBI-single by Ubrun, her third of the day.
BHSU regained the lead in the next at bat on a two-run homerun.
Trailing by two going to the final at bat, the Pack tied the game on five hits in the inning including two RBI-singles by Wolfe and Martindale, sending the contest into extra innings.
The Pack was unable to score in the extra frame setting the stage for the Yellow Jackets to plate one run in their half on an RBI-double, securing the win and series sweep.
CSU-Pueblo (3-16, 2-6 RMAC) opens its home portion of the schedule Mar. 5-6 and play host to UC-Colorado Springs in a four-game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series.
