CANYON, Tex. (February 13, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball teams' early season woes continued Saturday as the Pack dropped two games on the second day of the West Texas A&M Invitational. The ThunderWolves fell 5-2 in the first game of the day versus No. 10 Tarleton State, before suffering a 10-8 defeat against Cameron University in the nightcap.
In the opener versus TSU, the TexAnns used a balanced offensive attack as they scored at least one run in the first four innings to secure the win.
The Pack's only runs came in the bottom of the second inning on a two out RBI-single by Dora Hernandez (Sr., Benton City, Wash.), a second run would cross the plate on the same play on a defensive error.
The ThunderWolves were shut down the remainder of the game, earning one hit over the final five innings.
Starting pitcher Madison Wolfe (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) tossed five innings, surrendering five runs on ten hits and striking out three.
In the nightcap versus Cameron (Okla.), CSU-Pueblo put up a five spot in the top of the first inning, plating all five runners with one out.
CSU-Pueblo had seven of the first eight hitters reach safely, taking full advantage of three defensive errors by the Aggies.
Shelby Bennett (Fr., Norco, Calif.) and Hernandez each earned RBIs in the inning.
The designated home team Cameron took the lead over the next two innings putting up six runs on seven hits and capitalizing on three Pack errors in that span.
CSU-Pueblo regained the lead in the fifth inning, plating three runs in the frame on only one hit.
Hernandez tallied her second RBI of the game with patience at the plate while the bases were juiced scoring a run.
The second run of the inning came off the bat of Nicole Montoya (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) who reached base safely on a fielder's choice.
Moriah Turney (Jr., Brighton, Colo.) smacked her second hit of the contest and sixth of the weekend scoring the third and final run of the game for the Pack.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth and holding a two-run lead, the wheels fell off for CSU-Pueblo as they gave up four runs on three hits in the frame, along with one error gave the Aggies a two run lead.
CSU-Pueblo (1-8) concludes play at WTAMU Invite Sunday with games scheduled against Texas Woman's University at 11:45 a.m., followed with a matchup against Midwestern State at 2 p.m., wrapping up the weekend.
