ThunderWolves control the ground game in 56-12 victory at Adams State

Box Score

ALAMOSA, Colo. (October 8, 2016) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo football team totaled 394 rushing yards and allowed just 15 in a 56-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference road win at Adams State University, Saturday.

Junior running back Bernard McDondle (Littleton, Colo.) totaled 151 of his career-high 276 yards in the first half, while three of his four rushing touchdowns also came in the first two quarters. He rushed 18 times to average 15.3 yards per carry. The junior's long rush was for 80 yards to the end zone at the tail end of the third quarter.

The rushing yard total is the second most since the re-start of the program in 2008. The effort supersedes last season's game at ASU, as the Pack rushed for 386 yards in a 56-0 win. McDondle owned 181 of those yards (brother Cameron totaled 203). CSU-Pueblo allowed ASU 10 yards on the ground in that 2015 game.

The offense racked-up 645 yards of offense (most since 2008) with junior quarterback Rex Dausin (San Antonio, Texas) throwing for 232 yards and two scores. He was 12-for-18 (66.7%) with zero interceptions.

Senior Ryan Merrill (Scottsdale, Ariz.) guided a Pack defense that allowed just 15 rushing yards on 11 attempts (1.4 yards per attempt) with eight tackles (five solo) and a tackle for loss.

For the third time in four weeks, the Pack defense came up with a pick six, as senior LaRon Tarkington (S, Phoenix, Ariz.) got a jump on a ASU pass and returned it 22 yards for the score. CSU-Pueblo entered the game ranked tied for 19th in the nation in defensive scores. Tarkington had two interceptions in the game and added three solo tackles.

CSU-Pueblo has now scored 48 or more points in three straight road games at Adams State. Overall, the Pack have won eight straight against the Grizzlies.

The ThunderWolves were sharp in all facets of the game in the first half and the scoreboard rewarded the road team, ahead 35-6 at the break.

After allowing a touchdown (missed extra point) on ASU's first drive, it was all ThunderWolves for the rest of the way. The Pack rushed for 172 yards in the first half and allowed just 12.

It only took the Pack three plays to respond to the Adams State touchdown, as Dausin hit a wide open senior Daniel Wise (WR, Arlington, Texas) on a 40-yard connection.

Later in the quarter, McDondle busted through the line and went 43 yards to the paint to give the Pack a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.

A 21-point second was highlighted by a sophomore Cole Forsgren (Gilbert, Ariz.) 21-yard catch and run and two McDondle scores of 32 and 20 yards.

Adams State scored first in the second half, but the Tarkington interception for a touchdown and McDondle 80 yard score gave the Pack a 49-12 lead heading to the final quarter.

CSU-Pueblo eclipsed the 50-point mark when running back Austin Micci (R-Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) capped an eight-play, 63-yard drive with a four yard run to the end zone.

The ThunderWolves return home, where they are 2-0 on the season, to battle Fort Lewis College in the annual homecoming game. The RMAC contest is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
