Pack entertain Homecoming crowd with 33-12 victory

Box Score

PUEBLO, Colo. (October 15, 2016) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo football team gave the Homecoming crowd a show Saturday, as the ThunderWolves defeated Fort Lewis College 33-12 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.

The Pack (4-3, 4-2 RMAC) scored 26 unanswered points, capped by a safety, after allowing a first drive score by their opponent for the second straight week.

CSU-Pueblo has won all nine Homecoming games since restarting the program in 2008 and are 4-0 against Fort Lewis during that run.

CSU-Pueblo only produced two more yards of offense (330-328) against the Skyhawks (1-6, 1-6 RMAC), but capitalized on a +2 turnover margin and being issued just one penalty to FLC's eight.

The ThunderWolves totaled 179 yards passing and 151 yards on the ground, as quarterback Rex Dausin (Jr., San Antonio, Texas) went 12-for-24 with a career-high three touchdowns and one interception. His long connection went for 47 yards, which was to tight end Zach Boyd (Fort Lupton, Colo.). He finished with a team-high 92 yards and a touchdown on three receptions.

The run game was slowed by the loss of Bernard McDondle (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) early in the first quarter. Running back Austin Micci (R-Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) was the top back with 54 yards with a score.

Senior Daniel Wise (WR/KR, Amarillo, Texas) compiled 180 all-purpose yards with 87 yards on punt returns, 68 kick return yards and 18 reception yards. He scored a touchdown on one of his two receptions.

The dominated defensive effort was guided by the inside linebackers, as sophomore Brandon Payer (Pine, Colo.) finished with 14 tackles (five solo), a tackle for loss (-1 yard) and his first interception of the season. His partner in crime was senior Samuel Singleton (Denver, Colo.), who totaled 10 tackles (team-high six solo) with 1.5 tackles for loss (-2 yards). The two also combined for a forced fumble, which was credited to Singleton.

The Pack combined for a season-high four sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles (one recovered) and 11 tackles for loss, which backed up the FLC offense 31 yards.

After allowing the Skyhawks to march 65 yards to the end zone (failed two-point conversion) on the first possession of the game, the Pack responded on their first attempt with a 20-yard field goal by freshman Nathan Taylor (Phoenix, Ariz.).

A Dausin-Wise 13-yard connection midway through the opening quarter gave the home team their first lead of the contest at 10-6. The Pack would score just 1:45 into the second quarter on a five-yard connection between Dausin and junior Osha Washington (Stockton, Calif.) to put the red and blue up 17-6, which would be the halftime score.

A nine-point third by CSU-Pueblo, which included a Boyd six-yard score and a Pack safety where sophomore Brock Davies (Brisbane, Australia) got the stop in the end zone, gave the ThunerWolves a 26-6 advantage.

FLC orchestrated an 18-play, 88-yard drive that lasted 10:16 of game clock in the fourth to find the end zone and again fail on a two-point conversion, but the 26-12 difference would be as close as they would get.

On the next Skyhawk possession, the Pack took over on downs at the FLC eight yard line and punched in the final blow, a Micci run, to post the 33-12 win.

The Pack now head back on the road for two straight games starting at Black Hills State University (5-2, 5-2 RMAC), Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. in Spearfish, S.D.
