Pack survives 66-62 scare against Westminster

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (January 30, 2016) In the first ever meeting between the Colorado State University Pueblo women's basketball team and Westminster College, the Pack held off their newest Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals 66-62. With the win, the Pack now sit 17-4 (12-3 RMAC), while Westminster slipped to 7-12 (3-11 RMAC) despite their best efforts. 

Molly Rohrer (Fr. Greenwood Village, Colo.) led all scorers with 18 points. Rohrer also recorded two blocks and delivered a 7-of-14 shooting effort from the field.  The Freshman grabbed five rebounds and passed out three assists.

Down the stretch, Dee Arrieta (Sr., Pueblo, West, Colo.) caught fire. Arrieta finished with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists. She scored six of the Pack's final eight points to lead the ThunderWolves to victory.

Freshman Lauren Heyn (Fr., Loomis, Calif.) executed efficiently yet again as she provided 10 points and five rebounds, while making 4-of-7 from the field.

Ashley Piper (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) scored 11 points with 4-of-4 shooting from the free-throw line. Piper potted 3-of-6 from the field and dished out three assists.

As a team the Pack went 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) from the charity stripe. CSU-Pueblo also knocked down eight 3-pointers in the victory.

The Pack jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but the Griffins answered with a 10-point run that put them in front 14-9. However, an 8-2 ThunderWolves rally gave the Pack a 17-16 lead after one.  Rohrer scored nine points in the opening frame.

Even with the Griffins shooting 53.3 percent from the field in the first, the Pack kept it close. Down 37-34 with seconds remaining in the first half, Jaszymn Johnson (Sr., Denver, Colo.) sank a 3-point buzzer beater to knot it up at 37 heading into the break. Johnson finished with five points, four rebounds, and two blocks in 13 minutes off the bench.

The Pack made all seven of their free throw attempts in the first half. Rohrer swished each of her four attempts from the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes. 

A 13-5 run over the first 6:11 of the third quarter gave the Pack a 50-42 lead. However, Westminster would not go away. They answered with a 7-2 run that cut the Pack's lead to three entering the fourth quarter. 

In the fourth quarter, the Griffins stormed out to an 8-2 run over the first 3:03 of the final frame. This allowed Westminster to take a 61-58 lead with 2:37 left. With her team railing by three,  Arrieta  sank a clutch three to tie the game. 

Heyn scored on the next Pack possession to give CSU-Pueblo a two-point lead. Arreita knocked down three free throws to clinch a 66-62 win. 

After allowing the Griffins to catch fire in the first half, the Pack limited them to 30.3 percent in the second half. The Pack will return home Feb. 5-6 to play University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and Metropolitan State University-Denver. 

Friday's game against UCCS will tip at 5:30 p.m. The Pack will recognize its student-athletes with Honor Roll Night. All CSU-Pueblo faculty and staff will be admitted to both games during the weekend for free.  

Saturday's game against MSU-Denver features the return of Take a Kid To a Game Night.  All fans in eighth grade or younger will receive free admission to this game.

Denver Nuggets SuperMascot Rocky will be at the Pack's game Feb. 6 to entertain children. Rocky will also take photos and sign autographs with fans. The Pack's game on Feb. 6 begins at 5 p.m.
