Colorado Christian pulls away from Pack 78-68

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (January 23, 2016)– The Colorado State University-Pueblo  women's basketball team battled Colorado Christian University closely for three quarters,  however the Cougars pulled away from the Pack in the fourth to earn a 78-68 win. With the loss, the Pack falls to 15-4 (10-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). CCU matches the Pack with a 10-3 conference record and holds a 12-4 record overall.

 Dee Arrieta (Sr., Pueblo West, Colo.) filled the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Arrieta also knocked down 3-of-7 from downtown.

 

Following a 21 point effort in the Pack's win over Mines Friday, Tuileisu Anderson (So., Vancouver, Wash.) added 16 points for the Pack. Molly Rohrer( Fr., Greenwood Village, Colo.) chipped in 11 points as well.

 

Both squads traded the lead early until a six-point run propelled the Pack to a 12-7 edge with 2:25 left in the first. The Pack used the momentum from this run to hold a 16-12 lead after one. Anderson and Maddie Beagley (Jr., Russell, Kan.) each scored five points in the first quarter. Beagley finished the night with seven points and nine rebounds.

 

The evenly matched tussle continued into the second quarter. Colorado Christian outscored the Pack 19-15 in prelude to halftime to gain a 31-30 advantage at the break. Lauren Heyn scored five points for the Pack in the second.

 

After halftime, the game continued to remain close as the two teams stood tied at 43 with 3:06 left in the third. At this point, the Cougars erupted for a six-point run that allowed them to carry a 51-48 lead into the fourth.

 

Colorado Christian pulled away in the fourth. An 11-4 run over the first three minutes of the final frame gave the Cougars a 62-52 lead, the first double-digit lead of the game.

 

The Cougars built the lead to as many as 13 before the Pack bounced back with a 9-0 run that lasted three minutes and closed the lead to 68-64. Just when it looked like the Pack could win it, Christian answered with the next 10 points to reclaim a double-digit lead. They eventually closed out the Pack 78-68.

 

Jaszymn Johnson (Sr., Denver, Colo.) scored 10 points for the Pack off the bench. Ashley Piper (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) grabbed eight rebounds for the ThunderWolves.

 

With 78 points, the Cougars posted the highest total against the Pack this season. CCU shot 45.9 percent from the field, the best percentage allowed by the Pack since opening night.

 

The ThunderWolves will continue their four-game road trip next weekend when they journey to Grand Junction, Colo. to play Colorado Mesa University Friday at 5:30 p.m. The Pack's four-game road trips ends with a visit to Westminster University Saturday.

 

CSU-Pueblo will return home Feb. 5-6. The Pack's game Feb. 6 brings the return of Take A Kid to A Game Night, featuring free admission for children 14 & under. 

 

Denver Nuggets SuperMascot Rocky will be at the Pack's game Feb. 6 to entertain children. All fans 14 & under will receive free admission to this game.
