Big night on the offensive end overshadowed by Cougars in 115-113 loss

DENVER, Colo. (January 23, 2016) – Most would assume a repeat performance of 60-plus percent shooting and 16 3-pointers would equal victory, but Saturday a solid offensive performance by the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team was not enough in a 115-113 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss at Colorado Christian University.

The ThunderWolves (12-7, 8-5 RMAC) hit on a season-best 63.9 percent from the field and knocked down 16-of-30 from 3-point range (53.3%), but Colorado Christian (9-10, 5-8 RMAC) shot 68.6 percent from the field in the second half (60.3% overall) to erase a 15-point halftime deficit in the two-point win.

Senior guard Chris Golden (Milwaukee, Wis.) was a huge part of the offense, as he dropped 39 points, which was guided by eight 3-pointers (8-of-13 – 61.5%). He shot 57.9 percent from the field, was perfect from the free-throw line (9-for-9) and added six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Josh Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored 19 of his 21 points in the first half and hit on 5-of-8 (62.5%) from long range. Junior center Nelson Kahler (Noosa Heads, Australia) added 16 points on 8-of-9 (88.9%) shooting, while sophomore guard Will Newman (Lawndale, Calif.) totaled 15 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals off the bench.

CSU-Pueblo was a scorching 69 percent from the field and hit 11 3-pointers on 64.7 percent shooting from long range in the first half, but CCU continued to match the hot shooting in the second half to take its first lead since the opening minutes at 108-107 with 2:49 remaining.

The lead came in the midst of a 13-0 run during a 2:25 stretch in the final five minutes, which flipped a Pack 107-97 lead to a deficit for the road team at 110-107.

A 3-point dagger from Golden with 25 ticks left re-gained the lead for the ThunderWolves at 113-12, but a layup on the other end allowed the home team to lead 114-113 with 15 seconds showing on the clock.

With only four seconds remaining and trailing by one, Lear had an opportunity at the line with two free throw shots. Two misses and a Cougar rebound looked like the end of the Pack, but the ThunderWolves had one last shot in the final second, but a missed layup proved to be a missed opportunity for another road win and a big weekend sweep, as the final buzzer sounded with a CSU-Pueblo loss, 115-113.

The ThunderWolves remain on the road Jan. 29-30, as the Pack battle Colorado Mesa University (13-6, 9-4 RMAC) Friday and RMAC-newcomer Westminster College (9-8, 5-8 RMAC) Saturday.
