DENVER, Colo. (April 30, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team dropped its first round game against Adams State University 4-0, before bouncing back with a 4-1 win over New Mexico Highlands University, advancing to day two of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament in Denver.
In game one against the Grizzlies, the ThunderWolves offense was held in check as they gathered five hits in the game.
Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) went 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base to lead the Pack.
In the bottom of the first inning for the ThunderWolves, Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.) hit a triple to left centerfield with one out but was unable to cross the plate.
Adams State got on the board in their half of the second, hitting a single and a double in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Three more runs crossed in the third inning for the Grizzlies on four singles.
Pitcher Kelli Henry (Sr., Monument, Colo.) was tabbed for four runs on seven hits, she finished with eight strikeouts and zero walks allowed.
The Pack threatened to score in the sixth, loading the bases with just one out but was unable to score. In the game CSU-Pueblo left ten runners on base.
With the loss, the Pack dropped into the loser's bracket and played No. 8 seed New Mexico Highlands in the second game of the day. The Cowgirls fell into the loser's bracket after being no-hit against top-seeded MSU Denver 5-0 in a first round matchup.
In game two against NMHU, Henry again was called on to pitch as she held the Cowgirls to one hit through five innings of play.
The Pack scored the first runs of the game in the opening inning on back-to-back singles to begin the game from Snyder and Bailey, who later scored on a fielding error by the Cowgirls.
Offensively the Pack was led by Madison Wolfe (Jr., UT, Oxnard, Calif.) who went 3-for-3 at the plate with one double hit.
The ThunderWolves tallied two more runs in the third on a leadoff single from Snyder. One batter later, Chrystal Reese (Jr., OF, Pilot Point, Tex.) drilled a double to left centerfield that rolled to the fence, scoring Snyder.
Right fielder Dora Hernandez (Jr., Benton City, Wash.) earned her first RBI of the day with a groundout to the right side of the infield, scoring Reese.
Henry ended the game allowing one run on seven hits, to go with three strikeouts. Henry improves her record to 15-6 on the season.
CSU-Pueblo (28-22) will continue play in the RMAC Tournament Friday at 10 a.m. against either Regis University or Western New Mexico at Regency Athletic Complex on the campus of MSU Denver.
