DENVER, Colo. (April 11, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team earned a doubleheader split Saturday. The Pack defeated Regis University 5-2 in the first game before giving up a late lead in game two versus Adams State, falling 6-5 to the Grizzlies at Regis Softball Field.
Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.) had a solid game offensively, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo blast and two RBIs, guiding the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo scored two quick runs in the opening frame. First baseman Madison Wolfe (Jr., Oxnard, Calif.) hit an RBI single, plating the first run of the game followed with a walked earned by Moriah Turney (So., SS, Brighton, Colo.) with the bases loaded capped the scoring.
Two more runs crossed for the Pack in the top of the second inning. The ThunderWolves hit back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning, Bailey hit an RBI single in that span.
Left fielder Chrystal Reese (Jr., Pilot Point, Tex.) hit an RBI double, scoring the second run of the frame, building a 4-0 lead through two innings.
Bailey stepped to the plate again in the fourth inning, this time belting a solo shot with one out, extending the lead 5-0. It is the third homerun this season for Bailey.
Regis got on the board in the bottom of the inning on two hits.
Starting in the circle for the Pack, Kelli Henry (Sr., P, Monument, Colo.) threw seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Henry finished with five strikeouts, improving to 9-5 this season.
A seventh inning rally for Regis fell short, scoring one run and ending the game on a double play groundout.
In game two, the Pack offense quickly jumped on Adams State, scoring three runs in the opening frame on a three-run bomb from Reese for the lead. It was the fourth homer of the season for Reese.
Adams State got on the board in the bottom of the third on two hits.
The Pack added a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-double by Lexie Martindale (So., DP, Pueblo, Colo.), her second of the game.
ASU erupted with four runs in the bottom of fifth, hitting a three-run blast to take a 5-4 lead.
CSU-Pueblo tied the game 5-5 in the next at bat on a two out single by Wolfe, who was thrown out at second to end the inning.
The Grizzlies regained the lead in the sixth, with two hits and one Pack error in the inning.
A seventh inning rally with two runners on base fell short for the ThunderWolves, as they lost 6-5.
The same teams will play another doubleheader Sunday with the Pack first playing Adams State, followed with a contest with Regis in the finale. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Regis Softball Field.
