LAKEWOOD, Colo. (March 29, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team earned another doubleheader split Sunday at Colorado Christian. The Pack won the first game 12-6, before falling to the Cougars in the weekend finale, 6-5.
In the first game, trailing 3-0 through the first three innings, CSU-Pueblo (15-17, 11-9 RMAC) used a six-run fourth inning to take its first lead of the day.
The Pack connected on four straight hits in the inning, scoring six runs and capitalizing on three Cougar errors, jumping to a 6-3 lead heading to the home half of the fourth inning.
CCU tallied two runs in the bottom of the inning to get within a run, 6-5.
A scoreless fifth inning for both squads set the stage for an offensive eruption for the Pack. With one out and two runners on base in the sixth inning, Chrystal Reese (Jr., Pilot Point, Tex.) stepped to the plate, crushing a three-run blast over the left center field wall, her first as a member of the Pack.
Reese was not done though. In her next at-bat in the seventh inning, with the ThunderWolves holding a 9-6 lead, Reese connected her second homerun of the game with another three run shot, adding to the lead.
The six RBIs is a career high for Reese.
Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI. Including Reese and Snyder, four other Pack hitters notched multiple hits in the game.
The sixteen hits for the ThunderWolves is second most this season.
Kelli Henry (Sr., P, Monument, Colo.) picked up her seventh win of the season and second of the weekend, throwing her eighth complete game of the season. Henry allowed six runs on ten hits, striking out seven.
In the weekend finale, the Pack started slow, falling behind 2-0 after the first inning.
One run crossed the plate for the Pack in the top of the third inning on a RBI sac fly, cutting the lead in half.
The Cougars scored four runs over the next two innings, building a 6-1 lead through four innings.
CSU-Pueblo inched closer in the fifth on two doubles hit in the inning, resulting in a two-run single by Kennedy Smith (So., C, Fillmore, Calif.).
Wolfe, who began the game at first base for the Pack, came on to pitch in relief with one out in the fourth inning.
Yvanna Bejarano (Sr., P, Thatcher, Ariz.) started the game for the ThunderWolves, throwing 3.2 innings, surrendering eleven hits and six runs.
Wolfe helped her own cause in the top of the sixth, hitting a two-run blast, bringing the Pack within one, at 6-5.
A 1-2-3 seventh inning ended the game for the ThunderWolves.
On the weekend Snyder finished 10-for-17 (.588 avg.) with one home run and six runs scored to lead the Pack.
CSU-Pueblo next will play host to Colorado School of Mines in a four game series beginning Friday at noon at Rawlings Softball Complex.
