LAKEWOOD, Colo. (March 28, 2015) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team began a crucial RMAC series Saturday at Colorado Christian. The Pack shutout the Cougars 6-0 in game one, before falling 6-5 in game two.
In the first game, playing a scoreless tie through two innings, CSU-Pueblo scored first with three runs crossing the plate in the top of the third inning. Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.) crushed a three-run double with the bases loaded giving the Pack an early 3-0 edge.
Single runs scored in the top of the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning respectively, guided the Pack.
Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) and Madison Wolfe (Jr., DP, Oxnard, Calif.) each hit RBI singles over that span to lead the way.
Alyssa Ubrun (Fr., 3B, Olympia, Wash.) scored the final run of the contest with a one-out solo blast over the left field wall, her team-leading fifth homer of the season, cushioning the lead 6-0.
In the circle for the ThunderWolves, Kelli Henry (Sr., P, Monument, Colo.) threw the distance, going seven innings and allowing no runs on two hits. Henry had seven strikeouts on the day, improving to 6-4 on the season.
Hernandez, Snyder and Wolfe each had multiple hits, Snyder finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.
In the second game, the Pack jumped to an early 2-0 lead after three innings thanks to two RBI-singles from Chrystal Reese (Fr., Pilot Point, Tex.) in the first and third inning.
Holding the shutout through four and half innings, Colorado Christian plated four runs on two hits and a Pack defensive error, taking a 4-2 lead after five innings.
CSU-Pueblo responded with two runs in the next at-bat with a two-run blast by Lexie Martindale (So., DP, Pueblo, Colo.), scoring Hernandez who led off with an infield single, tying the game 4-4.
For CCU in the bottom of the sixth, the Cougars tallied two more runs on two hits, a walk, and hit batter taking a two run lead 6-4.
The Pack came out in the final at-bat swinging with Snyder leading off the inning with her second homer of the season, a solo shot to left field, bringing the Pack within one run but the rally would fall short for the ThunderWolves, as they fell 6-5.
Wolfe started in the circle for the Pack, throwing 5.2 innings allowing six runs on eight hits. She finished with six strikeouts.
Martindale faced two batters in the sixth, allowing one hit, scoring what turned out to be the game winning run with two out in the sixth.
Martindale was tabbed with the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season.
Bailey went 3-for-4, with two doubles and two runs scored in the game.
The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Park.
