ThunderWolves softball split two games Sunday, win 3-of-4 in series versus UCCS

PUEBLO, Colo. (March 15, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team split the final two games against University of Colorado Colorado Springs Sunday, winning game one 13-0 in five innings, and falling 4-0 in the weekend finale.

The ThunderWolves won 3-of-4 on the weekend, including a pair of wins Saturday.

In game one, the Pack erupted for seven runs on four hits in the first inning alone. CSU-Pueblo began the inning with a single, two walks, and two hit batters to take an early 2-0 lead.

Kennedy Smith (So., C, Fillmore, Calif.) highlighted the inning, blasting triple with the bases loaded, extending the lead 5-0. Two more runs crossed the plate for the ThunderWolves before ending the at bat.

UCCS starting pitcher was chased from the game to begin the second frame as Christina Patton came in to pitch for the Mountain Lions.

The Pack scored one run in the second inning when Smith hit an RBI single in her second at bat.

Another two runs crossed the plate for the Pack in the third inning on an RBI double from Lexie Martindale (So, P/DP, Pueblo, Colo.) to right center field, scoring Jasmine Vogel (Sr., OF, Oceanside, Calif.) who reached on an infield single to begin the inning.

Smith stepped to the plate for her third time, connecting an RBI single up the middle, scoring Vogel, extending the lead 9-0 through three innings.

The offensive attack was not finished as the Pack scored three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, hitting two doubles and two walks in the inning to secure the 13-0 victory.

Smith finished the game going 4-for-4 with a triple and five RBIs.

Starting pitcher for the ThunderWolves Kelli Henry (Sr., Monument, Colo.) was solid in her performance, throwing five innings, allowing six and striking out one UCCS hitter, improving to 5-3 on the season.

In the finale, UCCS pitcher Dani Fonseca held the Pack to just three hits in the contest. CSU-Pueblo did not get its first hit until the fifth inning on a single up the middle by Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.).

Clinging to a 1-0 lead through five innings, Fonseca hit a solo home run and the Mountain Lions added two more runs in the inning building to a 4-0 lead.

A seventh inning rally fell short for the Pack, falling 4-0. It is the first time this season the Pack failed to score a run in a contest.

Madison Wolfe (Jr., P, Oxnard, Calif.) pitched game two, throwing 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.

CSU-Pueblo (12-12, 8-4 RMAC) will hit the road next week and begin a four game series at New Mexico Highlands University. The Pack will open play Saturday in Las Vegas, N.M., first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Brandt Field.
