TUCSON, Ariz. (February 6, 2015) - The CSU-Pueblo softball team dropped two games, with just six hits on the day, at the opening day of the Leadoff Classic. The Pack fell 11-1 to Dixie St. in game one, followed by a 3-2 loss against Midwestern St., Saturday at Lincoln Park Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
In game one against Dixie State, a team that reached the national semi-finals a season ago, the ThunderWolves allowed one run in the top of the first inning, in its first time on the field this season.
The Pack would tie the game at one in the bottom of the second inning after a walk, followed by three hit batters, gave CSU-Pueblo its only run of the ball game.
Pitcher Kelli Henry (Sr., P, Monument, Colo.) got the starting nod for the Pack. Henry went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on eleven hits.
The Red Storm would break the game open with four runs in the top half of the sixth inning, chasing Henry from the game, making way for Yvanna Bejarano (Sr., P, Thatcher, Ariz.).
Bejarano pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing three additional runs in the top of the seventh putting the game out of reach.
In game two, against Midwestern St. (TX), the ThunderWolves scored one run in the top half of the first. Moriah Turney (So., SS, Brighton, Colo.) hit a sacrafice flyball with the bases loaded for her first RBI of the day.
Lexie Martindale (So., P, Pueblo, Colo.) started in the pitchers circle for the Pack. Carrying the 1-0 lead through three innings, Martindale surrendered two RBI-singles to give the Mustangs a 2-1 after four complete.
CSU-Pueblo would even the score in the top of the fifth, Turney led the inning with a single, and advance to second on a groundout the following batter.
A single up the middle by Kennedy Smith (So., C, Fillmore, Calif.) would score Turney from second, knotting the game two apiece.
The score remained the game heading into the seventh inning.
CSU-Pueblo's Alexa Snyder (Sr., 2B, Pueblo, Colo.) led off the top half with a single, and would steal second and later third base following a flyout. The next two hitters were unable to capitalize with a strikeout and flyout respectively.
The Mustangs used three singles in the bottom of the seventh inning to score the winning run, stealing the win 3-2.
CSU-Pueblo (0-2) will continue day two of the Leadoff Classic Saturday, playing one game against Central Oklahoma to finish pool play. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
