CANYON, Tex. (February 13, 2015) - The CSU-Pueblo softball team opened day one of the West Texas A&M Woodward Classic Friday in Canyon, Tex., defeating Texas Woman's University 10-6 before falling to No. 11 Angelo State 8-3 in the nightcap.
A five-run sixth inning was the difference for the Pack in game one versus Texas Woman's.
The ThunderWolves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-RBI double by Moriah Turney (So., SS, Brighton, Colo.) capitalizing on two singles earlier in the inning.
Single runs in the home half of the third and fourth inning by the Pioneers would tie the game at two apiece through three innings.
CSU-Pueblo pitcher Kelli Henry (Sr., Monument, Colo.) was effective in her third complete game in four outings this season, improving her record to 2-1, as she allowed six runs on 13 hits while finishing with four strikeouts.
The Pack took the lead in the fourth with the first three batters reaching base, chasing TWU starting pitcher Bailee Wortham. Chrystal Reese (Jr., C, Pilot Point, Tex.) drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Lexie Martindale (So., DP, Pueblo, Colo.) who led the inning off with a double. The Pack was unable to do any further damage, leaving three runners on base.
A double to lead off the fifth inning by first baseman Madison Wolfe (Jr., Oxnard, Calif.) set the table for another run, as she would score on a single by Turney and a defensive error to extend the lead to two runs at 4-2 through the top of the fifth.
A two-run home half of the fifth by Texas Woman's knotted the game 4-4.
CSU-Pueblo erupted for five runs in the sixth inning, collecting four hits, all singles, to put the game out of reach, 10-4 at that point. The inning was highlighted with three walks while the bases were loaded, along with a single by Martindale, scoring two more runs capping the frame.
Adding insurance in the final inning, Jasmine Vogel (Sr., OF, Oceanside, Calif.), who had gone 2-for-3 in the game with two free passes, tripled to open the seventh, and scored in the next at-bat on a double by Sidney Bailey (Sr., OF, Pueblo, Colo.).
The Pioneers added two runs in the final at-bat, ending the game 10-6.
In game two versus No. 11-ranked Angelo State, the ThunderWolves were held to only three hits, all singles, through five innings.
The undefeated Rams (8-0) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second on three doubles.
CSU-Pueblo starting pitcher Wolfe was shook up for eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in the game.
The Pack would score its only runs of the game in the sixth inning on a double by Dora Hernandez (Jr., OF, Benton City, Wash.) scored two runs, Hernandez would score the third run later in the inning on a double steal attempt, cutting into the lead at 5-3.
Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the Rams would be enough, ending the game 8-3.
With the loss Wolfe falls to 1-1 this season.
CSU-Pueblo (4-4) will return to action tomorrow with games scheduled versus Cameron (OK) and Midwestern State (TX) on day two of the WT Woodward Invite at Sports Park.
