Moton's last-second 3-pointer helps ThunderWolves knock off No. 1 Tarleton State 87-84 in OT

STEPHENVILLE, Texas (November 27, 2015) – Senior forward Bronson Moton (Aurora, Colo.) knocked down a 3-pointer with under a second left in overtime Friday to push the Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team to a major 87-84 upset of No. 1 Tarleton State University.

The win marked the second straight road win against a top-ranked team, as the Pack defeated No. 11 Midwestern State University Tuesday by the score of 87-74. The victory was the second in the last 11 months against a top five team nationally, as the ThunderWovles went on the road and knocked off then-No. 5 Colorado School of Mines, 77-61, Jan. 23.

Moton's dagger capped a strong effort from the senior, as he totaled 20 points and added a team-high eight rebounds with four assists and four steals. He also added a block and in 41 minutes of play turned the ball over just once. He was 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the field, 3-for-7 (42.9%) from long range and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Will Newman (G, Lawndale, Calif.) came off the bench and added 19 points with six rebounds and four assists. The 19 points tied a career-high set last season against Chadron State College. Senior guard Chris Golden (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored seven of his 10 points in the final 2:30 minutes of regulation and overtime, while senior Odessa Lear (F, Parkhill, Colo.) scored 10 points and added a team-high five steals, which contributed to the team's season-high 12 steals.

The ThunderWolves shot 48.4 percent from the field in the game and allowed Tarleton State to hit on 39.7 percent of its shots. The Pack hit 11 3-pointers and allowed just five.

A Moton old-fashioned 3-point play got the Pack rolling to an early 9-2 lead four minutes into the contest, but the Texans would comeback and take a 13-12 lead with 12:39 remaining in the first half.

After a Newman basket from downtown, TSU responded with a layup and the game was knotted 15-15 with 11:33 showing on the game clock. The Pack then posted an 8-2 run and Tarleton State wouldn't be tied or have the lead again until there were just 44 seconds left in regulation.

The ThunderWolves held a 42-35 lead at the break and would push their advantage to as high as 11 in the second half at 55-44 with 12:02 left. The lead was nine at 66-57 with 4:31 showing, but the home team battled back to a one possession game at 68-65 with 2:10 remaining.

A Golden 3-pointer with 1:21 in regulation pushed the Pack's lead to 73-68, but the Texans would go on to post a 5-0 run to close the half and force overtime. Both buckets were dunks and Tarleton State had a missed layup at the buzzer to win it.

It took two minutes for CSU-Pueblo to score in the extra session, but it converted a pair of and-one plays on back-to-back possessions to put the Pack up 79-77 with 2:39 remaining. The ThunderWolves trailed 81-80 with 1:03 left, but a Newman 3-pointer, then a free throw after a successful defensive trip down the court handed the road team an 84-81 lead with 22 seconds remaining.

Of course, Tarleton State had to come down the court and hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, but it just set up Moton's cold-blooded 3-pointer, as he pump faked, took a step to his right and knocked down the final nail in the coffin for the upset win.

The ThunderWolves will try and complete the sweep on the road week Saturday when it plays Texas A&M University-Kingsville at 4 p.m. MST in the finale of the Tarleton State Thanksgiving Tournament.
