WICHITA FALLS, Texas (November 24, 2015) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's basketball team used 12 buckets from long range to defeat No. 11 Midwestern State University, 87-74, in a road contest Tuesday in Wichita Falls, Texas. The two teams split a home-and-home series, as the Mustangs won at Massari Arena Thursday.
Senior forward Bronson Moton (Aurora, Colo.) recorded his best performance of the season, as he dropped 16 points, which included 4-of-5 (90%) shooting from 3-point land. Senior guard Chris Golden (Milwaukee, Wis.) added 18 points and three, 3-pointers. He was 7-for-8 from the free throw line, as the Pack went 23-of-29 (79.3%) from the charity stripe. Junior Nelson Kahler (C, Noosa Heads, Austrailia) was a perfect 7-for-7 from the line, as he totaled 13 points.
The ThunderWolves (3-1) shot 45.6 percent from the field, while holding the Mustangs (3-1) to 39.4 percent. MSU had shot 49.3 percent in its win Thursday.
The home team led by eight early at 19-11 with 12:56 remaining on the first half clock, but the ThunderWolves responded with a 9-2 run during the next 4:36 of game time to cut the deficit to just one, 21-20.
The Pack then took their first lead of the game at 25-23 on a Moton 3-pointer with 5:20 left in the first frame. CSU-Pueblo then ended the first with three, 3-pointers in the final two minutes to open a nine-point lead, 44-35 at the half.
The ThunderWolves pushed the lead to 12, 51-39 during the first 2:35 of the second, but a scoring drought that lasted four-plus minutes allowed the Mustangs to post a 13-0 run and retake the lead 52-51.
The teams traded buckets all the way to just under six minutes remaining and the scoreboard reading 70-69 in the favor of the visitors. An 11-4 run by the Pack during the next four minutes handed the ThunderWolves an 81-73 advantage with under two minutes left.
A 6-for-6 performance by Golden from the line iced out the Mustangs for the CSU-Pueblo victory. Four different players scored in the final push, as Golden totaled the final eight points.
The ThunderWolves now face No. 2 Tarleton State University, Nov. 27 in game one of the Tarleton State Thanksgiving Tournament. Friday's game is set for 6 p.m. MST, while Saturday's bout with Texas A&M University-Kingsville is scheduled for 4 p.m. MST.
