Track and Field complete strong showing at Colorado Mines Invite

GOLDEN, Colo. (January 31, 2015) - The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's and women track and field squads wrapped up a two-day event at the Colorado School of Mines Division II Invite with two second place finishes in team points, its strongest outing of the indoor season for the Pack.

On the women's side CSU-Pueblo earned 150 points as a team, behind only New Mexico Highlands with 167 total points. 

Freshman Rachael Lopez (Fr., Mid-Distance, Fort Lupton, Colo.) notched her third win in the 800 meter run, finishing at 2:16.75, setting an NCAA provisional in the event.

In the one mile run, Miriam Roberts (Fr., Sprints, Boulder, Colo.) picked up her first win as a member of the Pack, setting the pace at 5:23.52.

The ThunderWolves picked up six event wins on the second day of the two-day event. 

Shelby Sweeny (Jr., Distance, Worland, Wyo.) collected her first win in the 5000 meter distance run, finishing with a time of 19:05.60, almost nine seconds ahead of the next runner.

The quartet of Alyssa Evans (Fr., Colorado Springs), Sydni Riley (Jr., Florissant, Colo.), Lopez and Roberts used 4:00.49 mark in the 4x400 meter relay to win its first of the season in the event.

The 4000 meter relay, led by the same four runners, recorded a time of 12:36.91, adding to the team points.  

Veronica Burney (So., High Jump, Yoder, Colo.) used a leap 1.52 meters to seal her second win of the indoor season. Burney also competed in the Pentathlon, finishing third overall with 818 points scored.

The Pack men had the strongest outing of the season, snagging seven event victories leading to a second place finish in overall team points with 138.

Host of the two-day event, Colorado Mines tallied 211.5 total team points.

Three members of the ThunderWolves set marks better than the NCAA Provisional, includingDerrick Williams (So., Distance, Columbia Falls, Mont.) who ran a time of 8:36.92 in the 3000 meter run to best the provisional time of 8:50.90.

Fellow runner Devundrick Walker (Fr., Mid-Distance, Aurora, Colo.) also ran better than the provisional of 1:57.00, finishing at 1:56.74.

In the pole vault event, Harley Korte (Fr., Aurora, Colo.) finished first and threw for 4.67 meters, ahead of the 4.66 provisional distance.

The foursome of Mar'Keith Bailey (Fr., Denver, Colo.), Dante Carter (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.), Walker and Dueth Vassall (Fr., Denver, Colo.) placed first in the 4x400 meter relay. 

Carter, Vassall, Walker, and Williams won in the 4x4000 meter run.

Freshman Isaiah Palacio (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) placed first in the shot put event, throwing a distance of 14.29 meters for the win. 

CSU-Pueblo will next travel to Albuquerque, N.M. February 6-7 to compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
