The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team surrendered a goal in the 46th minute against Lubbock Christian (TX) University Sunday, falling 1-0 in Hays, Kansas.
Despite the scoreless game for the Pack (0-2, 0-0 RMAC), it was not for lack of effort and energy as they outshot the Chaparrals 25-18 in the game, including a game-high six shots by Matt Marchena (R-Fr., Forward, Littleton, Colo.).
"Our energy overall was good, we worked hard enough to create plenty of chances," head coach Roy Stanley said. "We as a team had our opportunity to score."
In their second game of the young season, the Pack's offensive pressure was present, having numerous scoring opportunities and solid defensive play through the scoreless first half. Lubbock Christian used a goal within the first minute of play in the second half, taking a 1-0 lead. The goal was a first-touch rebounded shot into the back of the goal by LCU's Darius Strambler.
"The goal was caught on a counter where our defense was unable to help defend the rebounded shot," Stanley added.
CSU-Pueblo redshirt junior goalie Sam Haseltine (R-Jr., St. Louis, MO) gathered nine saves in 18 shots in the game.
"Sam had a good performance, there was one breakaway where he was able to make a good save," Stanley added.
"I can't remember a time last season where we had two quality games in a row, from our offensive attack, to our solid defensive play, where the chances were there to score," said Stanley. "Our guys need to be more focused and knowledgeable in the box."
The Pack will begin the home season Friday, Sept. 12, against West Texas A&M University, kickoff is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at the new Art & Lorraine Gonzales Stadium
