PUEBLO, Colo. (Sept. 26, 2014) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo women's soccer team netted two goals in the first half, en route to a 3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory Friday versus Colorado Mesa University at the Art and Lorraine Soccer Complex.
Colorado Mesa (0-5-2, 0-2-1 RMAC) totaled seven shots on goal to the ThunderWolves' (3-2-1, 1-1-1 RMAC) six, but the home team controlled possession for most of the game. The win closed a four-game homestand that had the Pack go 2-1-1.
After 23 minutes of scoreless action, lightning struck twice for the ThunderWolves. Senior defender Samantha Lewis (Tucson, Ariz.) setup junior forward Amanda Jorgensen's (Wailuku, Hawai'i) second goal of the season at 23:41 on a beautiful pass from midfield. The ball came into Jorgensen's feet about 20 yards out and she beat one defender to the right of the Colorado Mesa goalkeeper before striking the ball into the side left netting. The Pack went up 2-0 at 37:35 on individual effort by freshman midfielder Danelle Dondelinger (Louisville, Colo.), as she picked the pocket of a Maverick defender and placed a shot from just inside the 18 past the Mesa goalkeeper.
The 2-0 halftime lead was cut in half at 69:59 when the visting team capitalized on a direct free kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
The ThunderWolves potted an insurance goal at 79:37 after a scramble infront of the Mavericks goal following a corner kick saw freshman Laikyn Koss (MF, Riverside, Calif.) finish her first goal of season into the back of the net from just a few yards out of the goalline.
Total shots in the game were even at 16-16, while CSU-Pueblo totaled four cornerkicks to the Mavericks' one.
Next for the ThunderWolves is their first RMAC road test of the 2014 season, as the Pack travel to Fort Lewis Unviersity Sept. 28 for a noon start.
