ThunderWolves crush Orediggers, end CSM's home-field winning streak

GOLDEN, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Mar. 15, 2014) – The Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team banged out 29 hits and scored the same number of runs as they dominated the host Colorado School of Mines Orediggers in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The 10-0 and 19-0 wins, both of which were in five innings due to the mercy rule, stopped the Orediggers' 26-game home-field winning streak and allowed the Pack to move to 8-11 overall and to 5-3 in RMAC play.  The Orediggers, who have now dropped six straight overall, are 7-12 overall and 3-7 in the loop heading into the final two games of the series, slated for 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The Pack have now scored 49 combined runs in their four wins during a 4-1 stretch over the last seven days.

All but seven of the Pack's hits were singles as they hit a combined .492 as a team throughout the doubleheader.  The other seven were doubles as six different Pack players drove in three or more runs on the day, a group led by Ariel Lopez (Jr., Fontana, Calif.), who went a combined 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI while walking twice in the twin-bill.

Meanwhile, Kelli Henry (Jr., Monument, Colo.) and Madison Wolfe (So., Oxnard, Calif.) both recorded shutouts from inside the circle.  Henry gave up just three hits and a walk while striking out five Orediggers in the opener while Wolfe allowed just two hits while striking out seven to improve to 5-1 on the year in the second game win.  She now has two shutout wins, both in RMAC play.

In the opener, the ThunderWolves scored six runs in the top of the second, thanks in part to the first of two Jasmine Vogel (Jr., Oceanside, Calif.) doubles.

Moriah Turney (Fr., Brighton, Colo.) also had a 2-run double in a 4-run third inning as the ThunderWolves banged out nine hits while making the most of five walks issued by the Orediggers throughout the win.  Vogel went 3-for-4 in the game.

The Pack's bats really came alive in the second game as they tallied 20 total hits while plating nine runs in the second inning alone.  Leading 11-0 at that point, the Pack poured it on scoring in each of the five innings to cruise to the win.

Lopez had two doubles and three RBI in the nightcap, which was CSU-Pueblo's most prolific scoring effort since Apr. 19, 2009, when they scored 22 runs in a win at New Mexico Highlands.
