LAS VEGAS (GoThunderWolves.com – Feb. 9, 2014) – A 2-run first and a 4-run barrage in the fourth gave the Colorado State University-Pueblo softball team a 6-0 lead before the Pack held on for a 6-3 win over Western Washington in the team's final game of the 2014 Desert Stinger Classic, which wrapped up Sunday here at Majestic Park.
The Pack finished the weekend, their first of the season, with a 2-3 record.
The Vikings went 3-2 in the tournament and are now 6-3 overall. They went 3-1 against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads over the weekend.
On Sunday, the ThunderWolves banged out a season-high 10 hits, all singles, and used three Viking errors, which resulted in four unearned runs to post the victory.
Lacey Chesser (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) had three hits from the No. 7 hole and designated player spot while second baseman Alexa Snyder (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored from her leadoff spot.
Snyder led the game off with an infield single and eventually scored the opening run on a Sidney Bailey (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) fielder's choice, moments before a Jordan Rodriguez (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) sacrifice fly plated Shelby Hetzel (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.).
In the fourth, the Pack capitalized on two Viking errors to score four unearned runs before Kelli Henry (Jr., Monument, Colo.) came in with one out in the bottom of the fourth, to pick up the win in relief of starter Lexie Martindale (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.), who had allowed just one hit in the first three innings.
Henry then gave up just two hits and a solo homer to Emma Blauser to begin the bottom of the sixth the rest of the way as the Vikings could not overcome the Pack's advantage.
The ThunderWolves are on the road again next week playing against Lone Star Conference completion at West Texas A&M's Woodward Invitational before beginning RMAC play on Feb. 22 at Black Hills State.
