SPEARFISH, S.D. (GoThunderWolves.com – Feb. 21, 2014) – Black Hills State made 12 long distance calls, shooting 50.0 percent from beyond the arc as the Yellowjackets used a big run early in the second half to help get past the visiting Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves, 78-68 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday night.
Making six treys in each half, the Yellowjackets improved to 10-14 overall and to 8-12 in RMAC play while the Pack saw a golden opportunity to take over sole possession of the important fourth place position in the RMAC standings go by the way-side despite 19 points from reigning RMAC/Baden Offensive Player of the Week Nate Tigner (Sr., Fort Worth, Texas).
The ThunderWolves, now 13-10 overall and 11-8 in the loop, were held to 21.9 percent (7-for-32) 3-point shooting, the true difference in the game.
CSU-Pueblo was within three at the half (36-33) and were within two (40-38) on a Tigner bucket with just over 17 minutes to go before two Ryan Riley treys highlighted a 16-2 Jacket run that increased the home team's lead to 56-40 with 13:45 to go.
The Pack would claw to within six on a Matt Rosenbaum (Sr., Sidney, Neb.) 3-pointer with 6:16 to go before Tommy Earl and Joey Mitchell long bombs on the Yellowjackets next two possessions helped put the game away.
With the loss, the Pack slipped behind Colorado Christian, now 12-8 in RMAC play, for fourth place in the RMAC standings but will have a chance to match the Cougars on Saturday night when they visit Chadron State (10-14, 7-13 RMAC), which fell at home to UC-Colorado Springs on Friday.
Fort Lewis and Adams State are also 11-8 in conference play.
