CANYON, Texas (GoThunderwolves.com - Feb. 15, 2014) - Facing their third nationally-ranked opponent in two weeks, the CSU-Pueblo softball team had little answers when facing No. 17 Angelo State (Texas) Rambelles, being shutout 12-0, in Saturday action at the Woodward WT Invitational. In the second game of the day, the Pack rebounded with a 11-2 victory against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Against Angelo State, the Pack managed just three hits, all singles, against solid pitching from the Rams. CSU-Pueblo starter Yvanna Bejarano (Jr., Thatcher, Ariz.) had a tough outing, facing just five batters and giving up five runs, three earned. Things did not get any easier. Three additional pitchers entered for the ThunderWolves, surrendering six more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
In the later win over Kingsville, the Pack jumped to a quick 4-1 lead after the first inning when Pack leadoff hitter Alexa Snyder (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) singled, then stole second and scored shortly after when Sidney Bailey (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) singled up the middle. The next batter Dora Hernandez (So., Benton City, Wash.) reached on an error, and advanced Bailey to third base. The Pack took the lead for good on a Lacey Chesser (Sr., Oxnard, Calif.) double to left field. A walked batter, followed by a double from Brittany Styger (Jr., Kent, Wash.) gave the ThunderWolves all the cushion they would need.
Pack starting pitcher Samantha Avii (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) gave up just two runs on five hits in five solid innings, picking up her first win on the young season. Lexie Martindale (Fr., Pueblo, Colo.) pitched one scoreless inning to complete the solid performance.
CSU-Pueblo will now face yet another ranked opponent when they play a doubleheader on Sunday against tournament host and eighth-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs, first pitch is slated for 1 p.m. (CST).
