CANYON, Texas (GoThunderWolves.com – Feb. 14, 2014) – Like a teenager dumped by her boyfriend on Valentine's Day was a heartbreaking one for the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolf softball team, which fell to walk-off hits in both of their games at the Woodward WT Invitational on Friday.
The Pack, now 2-5 on the season, dropped a 5-4 decision in eight innings to Tarleton State (Texas) before giving up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh, falling 3-2 to Eastern New Mexico.
In the morning game against the TexAnns, the Pack jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a 2-run Moriah Turney (Fr., Brighton, Colo.) triple in the fourth. However, Tarleton State came back in the fifth with three runs, scoring on a sacrifice fly followed by back-to-back singles.
However, the ThunderWolves tied the game at 3 on a Jasmine Vogel (Jr., Oceanside, Calif.) single in the sixth before taking a 4-3 lead later in the frame when Madison Wolfe (So., Oxnard, Calif.) drew a 2-out bases-loaded walk that forced Vogel in.
The TexAnns would come back in the seventh scoring a single run that tied the game at four before leaving the bases loaded.
Playing with the international tie-breaking rule in the eighth, the Pack then ran themselves out of the inning with a double-play before Amber Clifford plated Erika Menchaca, who started the bottom of the inning on second base, with an RBI single, the game-winning play.
Turney and Vogel each went 2-for-4 in the game while Kelli Henry (Jr., Monument, Colo.) took the loss in relief of starter Samantha Avii (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) for CSU-Pueblo. Randi Fentress earned the win for Tarleton State.
In the afternoon game against Eastern New Mexico, the Pack scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings on Sidney Bailey (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) and Vogel run-scoring singles.
Meanwhile, Wolfe held the Zias to a single hit through six innings before an error and two singles loaded the bases with one out. Kyra Sirag then hit a 3-run double to win the game for the Zias, who had just four innings throughout.
Bailey had two of CSU-Pueblo's six hits.
The Pack will play four more games throughout the weekend, facing Angelo State (Texas) and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon (Mountain Time), respectively. They then play tournament host and eighth-ranked West Texas A&M twice on Sunday.
