Box Score DURANGO, Colo. (Ray Dennison Memorial Field) – The No. 2 Colorado State University-Pueblo football team's 42-game regular season winning streak, which started Oct. 23, 2010, came to an end Saturday in a 23-22 upset loss at Fort Lewis College.
The streak goes down as the second-longest regular season winning streak in NCAA Division II history, behind at 48-game win streak by Grand Valley State University from 2004-09.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest at Ray Dennison Memorial Field had six lead changes, with the last coming on a touchdown by Fort Lewis (2-4, 1-3 RMAC) to take the 23-22 lead with 3:46 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore LaRon Tarkington (DB, Phoenix, Ariz.) guided the Pack (5-1, 3-1 RMAC) in tackles with nine (seven solo). Junior running back Cameron McDondle (Littleton, Colo.) rushed for 138 yards on 18 carries to average 7.7 yards per rush. The 100-yard game was his fourth of the season and second straight contest.
Fort Lewis scored first on a nine-play, 75-yard drive to the end zone to open the 7-0 lead with 11:22 showing on the first quarter clock. The Pack defense responded on the next Skyhawk drive with a fumble recovery by senior defensive end Josh Bredl (Thornton, Colo.) that he returned 80 yards to the house to knot the contest 7-7 midway through the opening frame. The fumble return for a touchdown was the first by a ThunderWolves playe since current junior linebacker Joe Rosenbrock (Brush, Colo.) fell on a lose ball in the end zone versus New Mexico Highlands University last season.
A 30-yard field goal from junior kicker Greg O'Donnell (Monument, Colo.) with 10 ticks left on the first quarter clock capped the scoring in the quarter and gave CSU-Pueblo the 10-7 lead.
The SkyHawks responded with an eight-play, 75-yard drive past the goal line to retake the advantage, this time a 14-10 lead with 13:01 left in the half.
Two O'Donnell field goals (34- and 25-yards) gave the road team a lead again at 16-14 heading into halftime.
The teams then had a two hour and 15 minute halftime, as storm clouds rolled into Durango and lightning cause a delay that saw the teams return to the field at 3:17 p.m. to start the second half.
A field goal from 20 yards out by Fort Lewis was the only score of the third, giving the home team a 17-16 lead.
The Pack offense then used a four-play, 66-yard drive to open a 22-17 lead with 10:06 remaining on the clock. McDondle totaled 45 yards in the drive, which was capped by a junior running back J.B. Mathews (Aurora, Colo.) four-yard rush.
A two-point conversion failed to make it a seven point game and the back led by five.
Fort Lewis scored the go-ahead touchdown with less than four minutes left in the game, which was set up by a recovered fumble on a punt at the CSU-Pueblo 26-yard line, to take a 23-22 lead. The Skyhawks attempted a two-point conversion of their own, but it failed.
The Pack offense had two chances at a comeback drive in the final three minutes, but failed to produce the heroics it has late in games this season.
The ThunderWolves were out-gained 410-342 and lost the first down category 19-14.
Next for the Pack is a homecoming contest against Chadron State College, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. The game is set to air on Altitude Sports and Entertainment Network.
