GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com – Sept. 27, 2013)- The Colorado State University-Pueblo men's soccer team lost a well-contested match to Colorado Mesa 4-0 on Friday. 

The loss drops the ThunderWolves to 1-6 on the season while they are still searching for their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win. The Mavericks of Colorado Mesa improved to 3-3-1 (1-1-1 RMAC). 

The game was knotted 0-0 early on in the first half, with Colorado Mesa taking a majority of the shots. ThunderWolf goal keeper Sam Haseltine (So., St. Louis, Mo.) played lights out though, and was able to keep his squad in the game. 

"Sam deserves a lot of credit," Head Coach Roy Stanley said after the game. "Yeah, he had four goals scored against him, but none of them were really his fault."

Late in the first half, CMU's Nestor Escobar netted the first goal, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. The score would remain 1-0 up until the 73rd minute, a point that Coach Stanley emphasized. 

"Ultimately, it's still a one goal game in the 73rd minute," Stanley said. "We are creating some opportunities, but we have to keep a belief that we can win, even when facing a one or two goal deficit." 

Unfortunately, the ThunderWolves were unable to create any offense, despite Matt Marchena (So., Littleton, Colo.) leading the team with three shots, one of them on goal. 

"We need to do a better job of getting [Matt] the ball and give him more opportunities," Stanley said. "But I think it's going to come around." 

The Mavericks ultimately went on to score three more goals in the final 17 minutes and hand CSU-Pueblo a loss, though Coach Stanley believes the ThunderWolves will turn things around soon. 

Stanley was pleased with the sportsmanship and competitive spirit his team displayed throughout the night.  

Next up for the ThunderWolves is a road trip to RMAC opponent Metro State, where game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
