ThunderWolves fall to top 25 foe

By Jason Cowan

GOLDEN, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Sept. 20, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo women's soccer team lost to the No. 13 Colorado School of Mines Orediggers 2-0 on Sept. 20, at the CSM Soccer Stadium in Golden, Colo.

Although the ThunderWolves have lost the first two RMAC games after starting the season 3-0, head coach Paul Regrutto noticed some bright spots after their first game against a ranked opponent this season.

"It's probably our understanding of the middle third of the field," Regrutto said. "It wasn't consistent, but there were times that we did well."

Even though the ThunderWolves were outshot 26-4 in regulation, as Savannah Thompson (Sr. Upland, Calif.) finished the game with eight saves, the number of shots is not the most important stat to Regrutto.

"The shots are not necessarily indicative of what type of shot," Regrutto said. "It's quality of chances, and I don't think we're going to get 25 shots a game against every team."

The Orediggers scored the first goal in the 19th minute when Kenzie King scored on a header from three yards out.

"They crossed it in, their player kind of beat us to it," Regrutto said. "I don't think we were positioned very poorly, but the girl I thought did a good job."

The second goal came in the second half, at the 76th minute when Rachael Turner scored from 30 yards out.

"I thought it was a pretty good ball," Regrutto said. "They were two good goals from them, you can't really take much away from them."

Next up, the Pack will travel to Colorado Mesa to take on the Mavericks at 7 p.m. on Sept. 27.

"We'll focus this week on making sure we get some training in, keep developing the attacking side of the ball and create some more opportunities," Regrutto said.
