SAN ANGELO, Texas (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 15, 2013) - The CSU-Pueblo softball team kicked off their 2013 season earning a split in their first day of action. The ThunderWolves defeated home team, fourth-ranked Angelo State, 5-4, before falling in the later game to St. Mary's, 6-2.
In game one the Pack were the first to strike after Lacey Chesser (Jr., Oxnard, Calif.) and Alexa Snyder (So., Pueblo, Colo.) registered back-to-back singles in the third inning. With two on and no outs Kelsey Wager (So., Pueblo West, Colo.), brought home Chesser on a RBI groundout to shortstop. Pitcher Justine Bosio (Sr., Santa Barabara, Calif.) helped her cause when a batter later she brough home Snyder with an RBI single to put the Pack up 2-0.
The Rambelles would cut the deficit in half, scoring a run on an RBI single by Amanda Wilhelm in the top of the fourth.
The Pack would get the run back and more in their half of the inning, coming from the bat of Chesser. The junior who missed the 2012 season with an injury, picked up where she left off in 2011 with a three-run homer to left field to put the Pack up 5-1.
Angelo State would threaten in the fifth, scoring two runs in the inning before loading the bases after a hit-by-pitch by Bosio. The threat would be extinguished though when on the next play a fielder's choice to Chesser turned into an out at the plate. Bosio would get the next batter to groundout to third to end the inning.
Bosio picked up the complete game win, going seven innings and allowing four runs on six hits. She also struck out six.
In the afternoon contest vs. St. Mary's, the Pack ran into a hot pitcher in Vianna Gutierrez. Gutierrez shut down the ThunderWolves for much of the afternoon going for a complete game win in which she gave up two runs on four hits, while striking out 10 batters.
The Rattlers jumped out to an early lead, scoring runs in each of the first three innings. Coupled with a throwing error and a passed ball the score was 6-0.
The ThunderWolves threatened late but nothing ever materialized. They were able to score their first run at the top of the sixth and an RBI double by Dora Hernandez (Fr., Benton City, Wash.) in the seventh capped off the Pack's scoring.
The team will play two more games Saturday beginning with St. Mary's at 10:30 a.m. CST. They will also play Texas-Permian Basin with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. CST.
