ALAMOSA, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Dec. 6, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo had an offensive explosion Friday night, raining down threes as it handed the first loss of the season to Adams State in a 101-94 win.
Led by a 26-point effort by Wendell Lee (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.), who recorded a career-high in the win, CSU-Pueblo led by as much as 17 in a game that the Pack led by double-digits for most of the way.
Despite that, CSU-Pueblo head coach Ralph Turner said he still had some level of disappointment in the Pack's level of play in the win.
"I didn't think we played very well," Turner said. "We shot the ball okay, but we had a bunch of wide open looks in the second half that we didn't convert. But this is a tough place to play, and I'm proud of our kids and that they gave us a chance to win and played hard."
Adams State's big threat came late in the game when it went on a run that shaved the Pack lead to just four. But CSU-Pueblo circled the wagons quickly, getting big foul shots and fast break scores to extend the lead back to double digits inside of the final two minutes and hold on to the win.
"They went all small on us - all guards - once they got down, and we played a little different and played some zone against them," Turner said of the fizzled out comeback attempt by Adams State. "But this game really was never in jeopardy of us losing. To win by seven points, for us, that's a blowout," he joked.
Now at 1-0 in conference play, CSU-Pueblo will try to make it a perfect weekend to start the RMAC slate as it travels to Durango to take on a Fort Lewis squad that as recently as last week was ranked in the top 20 nationally.
