ThunderWolves defeat UCCS on Senior Day

PUEBLO, Colo (Gothunderwolves.com - Nov. 3, 2013) It was a typical Senior Day celebration on Sunday before a 1-0 victory in last game of the season vs. the UCCS Mountain Lions.

Minutes later however, the ThunderWolves fielded a starting lineup that featured defender/forward Tamra Nee (Sr. Honolulu, Hawaii), who had not played since Oct. 6 vs. Regis, for the first minute of her final game.

"It's just a ceremonial thing, you want everyone to start their senior game," head coach Paul Regrutto said. "We talked with the other coaches, and they're really good people and said lets just get the ball to her and take it out, that way she can kind of walk off."

Nee, who missed the previous seven games before with an injury that is still in the process of being diagnosed said she appreciated her final start as a member of the Pack.

"It means everything to me. It's my last collegiate game, I don't even know if I'll be able to play soccer again," Nee said. "All I wanted was to step on the field again."

Among the other seniors playing their final games was goalkeeper Savannah Thompson (Sr. Upland, Calif.), who finished her career with several accolades, including: the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Year and was an RMAC First Team All-Conference selection in 2011; was the preseason All-RMAC goalkeeper of the year and third-team all-conference in 2012 and was the preseason All-RMAC goalkeeper of the year in 2013.

"I think I'm the least emotional out of everyone because it hasn't hit me yet. I still think practices are on Monday and Tuesday and I still have a game on Friday; I guess I just don't want to believe it," Thompson said. "It's very sad for me since I've been here all four years, I just don't want to believe it."

Although the ThunderWolves finished the season 7-10, 4-10 RMAC, the victory of Sunday vs. the Mountain Lions could be something to build upon for next season, according to Regrutto.

"I think this program is building in general, and the program is getting better all the time," Regrutto said. "The girls that have been here this year are the start of something that I think everybody will be really proud of."
