Women's soccer drops defensive battle to Regis

Denver, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com) - Nov. 1, 2013 - CSU-Pueblo lost 2-0 to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent Regis University on Friday, despite a strong defensive performance led by goalkeeper Savannah Thompson (Sr., Upland, Calif.).

The ThunderWolves, now 6-10 on the season (3-10 in RMAC play), staved off the Regis attack until the 79th minute, when Regis' Sade Akindele broke through with her fourth goal of the season.

Just four minutes later, the ThunderWolves committed a foul on another shot by Akindele, which set up a penalty kick goal that would unfortunately be the second and final goal of the game.

Though Regis scored two goals, the ThunderWolves were able to fend off the opposing offense for the most part, with Thompson blocking eight shots on goal.

Offensively, the ThunderWolves had just two shots in the first half, but picked up the pace in the second as they attempted eight shots in the final 45 minutes. They were led by Amanda Garcia (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.) with five shots, four of them on goal.

Unfortunately, an increase in penalties was also seen in the second half. CSU-Pueblo committed 11 penalties on the day, compared to only four by Regis.

With the ThunderWolves sitting in 10th place in the RMAC with only three tournament spots left for grabs, they will likely conclude their season at home on Sunday against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs at 12 p.m.
