Lakewood, Colo (Gothunderwolves.com - Oct. 27, 2013) It has been a little more than two weeks since the ThunderWolves women's soccer team has won a game.
Following a four game losing streak, one in which saw the Pack lose three of the four in the final 10 minutes, the Pack returned from Lakewood a victor, for the sixth time this season.
The ThunderWolves defeated the Colorado Christian Cougars 2-0 on Sunday behind a defensive effort that saw the Cougars take a lot of shots on goal.
Throughout the course of the game, the Cougars took 17 shots, 14 coming on goal. In addition to the shots on goal, the Cougars finished the game with two corner kicks.
"A lot of them were from distance; quality of chances, how many real good chances do they have. I though some of their better chances don't even show up on the stat sheet," head coach Paul Regrutto said. "Shots are not really an indicator of the efficiency and the effectiveness of the team. Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren't. Corner kicks, in my opinion are better to get. That means you're down in their area a lot more."
With the shut out, goalkeeper Savannah Thompson (Sr. Upland, Calif.) recorded her fifth shut out in six wins on the season after a 14 save performance on the day.
"She made a lot of those saves look pretty routine," Regrutto said. "I thought she played really consistently today."
The ThunderWolves took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute when Abigail Chris (Sr. Anchorage Alaska) scored off of a rebound.
"It was just kind of a scramble in the box," Regrutto said. "The goalkeeper bobbled it, Abby was there and just kind of followed it up. That's kind of an attitude, not letting the ball get out there."
The Pack made took a 2-0 lead in the 23rd minute after Brittany Kliesen (Jr. Pueblo, Colo.) scored following a corner kick, with the assist coming from Amanda Jorgensen (So. Wailuku, Hawaii).
"That's just a corner that was played back post," Regrutto said. "She just volleied it in out of the air, a good finish from her."
The ThunderWolves will travel to Denver to play the Regis Rangers on Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m. in the final road game of the season.
