Pueblo, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - October 13, 2013) - After two consecutive shut out victories at home, the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's soccer team lost to the Adams State Grizzlies 1-0 on Oct. 13.
But that is not the only loss the team suffered on the day.
In the 27th minute, All-RMAC goalkeeper, Savannah Thompson (Sr. Upland, Calif.) left the game after saving a shot by Jenezza Sandoval. Thompson did not return.
"She made a great save, and she had to perry it to keep it out of the goal. When she went to get the rebound on the perry, the girl came though and kicked her, or kneed her in the head", head coach Paul Regrutto said.
The extent of the injury and the recovery timeline is unknown at this time, according to Regrutto.
"We're not sure" said Regrutto of whether Thompson was concussed. "It's one of those things that will be determined this week."
Even though the Pack played without their starting keeper for more than 50 percent of the game, Regrutto did not think the outcome of the game was affected.
"I don't think any of it (was affected)," Regrutto said. "She's a great player, you'd always like to have her on the field."
The Grizzlies took the lead in the 84th minute following a corner kick by Samantha Marcolina, assisted by Alex Sanderson.
"It was just a scrappy goal. They ran that corner pretty well," Regrutto said. "I don't feel like anyone did a poor job there, I just felt like it was a dangerous ball and they won the second ball."
Although the ThunderWolves were shut out, they did have opportunities to score, taking 12 shots, two on goal. One opportunity in particular came in the 32 nd minute when forward Amanda Jorgensen (So. Wailuku, Hawaii) took a shot that hit off of the top of the post.
"It's the one that's the closest in terms of hitting the goal, but we had some other really good chances, I thought, throughout the game," Regrutto said. "That one hits the post and it's a good shot, but we were a lot more dangerous and close to the goal."
The loss capped off Parents Weekend for the team, where the families of 20-of-25 players came to visit and watch two soccer games throughout the weekend.
"We just did a little breakfast this morning, kind of a get the team and the parents together breakfast, then we just had a little ceremony before the game," Regrutto said. "It's a two day event, but the events took place today because a lot of times a lot of parents won't make it on a Friday."
Of the parents that were in town for the weekend were Terri and Dave Jorgensen, who came from Hawaii to watch Amanda Jorgensen play.
"They got here Friday, and they're staying here until next weekend," Amanda Jorgensen said. "It means a lot because I don't see them very often because I only go home for Christmans break and then summer; spring break and Thanksgiving break I don't go home, so it's not like I see them very often."
The ThunderWolves will host New Mexico Highlands next Friday at 7:00pm, as part of the CSU-Pueblo "Kickin' Cancer" weekend of athletic events.
