First half lapses sink ThunderWolves

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Sept. 23, 2012) - Despite a solid second half Sunday against Metro State, CSU-Pueblo couldn't recover from a two-goal deficit surrendered in the first half, falling 3-0 to the Roadrunners.

The ThunderWolves had a number of opportunities to keep up with a Metro offense that broke down CSU-Pueblo's defense in the first half.

A couple friendly bounces on balls from Alicia Irwin (Jr., North Richland Hills, Texas) would have changed the complection of the game, as she was mere inches away from a two-goal game. She hit two shots off the crossbar, one coming on a 30-yard free kick that nearly fell in for a score, and the other coming on a one-versus-one chance in which she nearly beat the defender and sent it to the back of the net.

CSU-Pueblo had a much better showing defensively in the second half, maintaining better possession of the ball and getting a big save from keeper Savannah Thompson (Jr., Upland, Calif.) on a penalty kick try, but the difference was the ThunderWolves' struggles to get off solid chances, head coach Janet Cassidy said.

"We possessed the ball well, but had trouble connecting and getting shots off in the final third," Cassidy said.

CSU-Pueblo will travel on the road to face New Mexico Highlands Friday before returning home for a rivalry matchup with UC-Colorado Springs Sunday.
