Pack playoff hopes take nosedive with loss to Chadron

CSU-Pueblo now in likely situation of having to win two next weekend to make postseason.

CHADRON, Neb. (GoThunderWolves.com - Feb. 18, 2012) - It was only four weeks ago that CSU-Pueblo embarrassed Chadron State by 25 points at Massari Arena.  Saturday, with a playoff spot potentially on the line for the both teams, it was Chadron that was the victor, winning 60-56.

Early on, though, it was certainly embarrassing for both teams, as the two squads struggled in all phases to post just 32 combined points by halftime as Chadron held a 17-15 lead at the break.  At the media timeout halfway through the first half, the Chadron lead was a baseball-like 6-5.

Both offenses woke up in the second half, but two keys helped Chadron State keep at least a slight advantage most of the night - key rebounding dominance over the ThunderWolves and a cold night by the Pack shooting the three-ball.  Chadron out-rebounded CSU-Pueblo 43-29 and the ThunderWovles were just a 1-for-19 from three, not hitting their first - and only - three pointer until Andre Martin (Sr., San Diego, Calif.) hit a trey with just 1:10 left in the game.

The loss in a game that was seemingly a must-win for the ThunderWolves is a huge setback for the Pack's playoff hopes.  It is currently a half-game out of the eighth spot in the conference (the threshold for qualifying for the RMAC playoffs), trailing Western State by a half-game.  Its final regular season weekend isn't exactly easy, either - the ThunderWolves will host the 4th-ranked team in the country in Colorado School of Mines on Friday then Colorado Christian on Saturday.
