PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 26, 2012) - For the three seniors playing in their final collegiate game a 1-1 tie to Colorado Mesa had to be somewhat bittersweet. The Pack had just begun clicking on all cylinders and was playing their best soccer of the year, but even with a win an earlier 5-0 decision by Fort Lewis saw the ThunderWolves on the outside looking in.
The Pack put on a pretty convincing performance in the final game of the season, outshooting the Mavericks 16-10. Possession slightly favored the Pack, but even when Colorado Mesa possesed the ball they were unable to produce anything dangerous.
The lone dangerous attempt did cause quite a sting as early in the second half as forward Stevie Palma was able to find a loose ball at the tox of the box and finish the play to put the Mavericks up 1-0.
That attempt ended a shutout streak by the team and Patrick Markis (Sr., Tempe, Ariz.) that spanned a school record of 579 minutes.
The Pack was able to score an equalizer late in the game started by a great individual effort by Matt Marchena (Fr., Littleton, Colo.). Marchena was able to beat a Maverick defender down the left side before sending a driven cross into a crowded box. Jack Gonzales (So., Centennial, Colo.) finished the ball on a volley to add his first collegiate goal.
For the Pack, the late run has to be gratifying as they finished the final six games of the year with a 2-0-4 record. It was also the final game for Markis, Ryan Hunter (Sr., Goodyear, Ariz.) and Kevin Hamilton (Sr., Peoria, Ariz.)
