Pack comes from behind to earn draw at Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Oct. 19, 2012) - If there was anything to ever learn from the CSU-Pueblo women's soccer team, it was that there isn't an ounce of quit in the team's DNA. The Pack showed their resilence again, scoring a late second half goal to earn a 3-3 tie against Adams State.

Alicia Irwin (Jr., North Richland Hills, Texas) was a tough matchup for the Grizzlies all game as she got off to a fast start, taking her first two shots before Adams State could answer. In fact, the Pack rattled off four shots and earned a corner kick, all within the first 15 minutes of the game.

The fast start would finally pay dividends when Irwin was rewarded for her hard work with a goal off a free kick at 19:34 in the first half.

The goal seemed to awaken the Grizzlies as they scored the equalizer just two minutes after the Pack's opening goal. Jenna Iwaniec's initial shot was blocked by the defense, but the rebound was recovered by Brooke Dudley to tie the game for Adams State.

The game seemed to even out as the first half wore on, helping both teams settle into a groove. The fast start by the Pack would be erased though when the Grizzlies turned a corner kick into a goal, scoring off of a volley by Kristine Hacket.

The fast start would carry on to the second half, as the Pack found the equalizer, capitalizing on a foul from the Grizzlies. Irwin showed off her free kick ability, scoring her second goal of the game and her third of the season.

Irwin finished with a game-high seven shots, earning four points on two goals.

Again the Grizzlies would strike to take the lead, this time off of a header from Allie Mercado. Mercado received a crossing pass from Laci Jones that she would finish to put the Grizzlies up 3-2.

It looked as though the Grizzlies would pull off the victory as the clock wound down, but the perseverance of the Pack showed as they fought down to the wire.

At 88:56 the Pack capped off a hard fought game with a goal from Abigail Chris (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska). Chris received the ball on the wing and sent a curling shot into the box that held true to beat the keeper and give the Pack a 3-3 tie and a chance for overtime.

Both teams had opportunities in overtime, but none prevailed as the teams played to a draw.

The final road game of the season proved to be an offensive affair as the teams combined for 39 total shots and 12 corner kicks.

The Pack returns home Sunday to host Fort Lewis, with a kick off scheduled for noon.

The game will be apart of "Pink Week", in which CSU-Pueblo Athletics will raise funds locally for cancer awareness, benefitting the St. Mary-Corwin Breast Center for Excellence. Both the men's and women's team host their third annual "Kickin' Cancer" event.
