Pack squeeze out tough victory against Eagles

PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Jan. 20, 2012) - Even though the Colorado State University-Pueblo women's basketball team never trailed against Chadron State Friday night, the Eagles did enough to frustrate the Pack as they squeezed out a 61-49 victory at Massari Arena.

The Eagles played tough defense all night forcing the ThunderWolves into tough shots. As a team the Pack shot 34 percent from the field.

But just as the Eagles frustrated the Pack the ThunderWolves returned the favor on the defensive end holding Chadron State to 29 percent shooting. The solid defense should only help the Pack as they are holding opponents to a conference best in shooting percentage defense.

Laurel Kearsley (Jr., Victor, Idaho) scored early and often for the Pack as she led the way to a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds. Jennelle Branting (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) was also solid on the night finishing with 12 points and six rebounds.

The Pack jumped out to an early 17-point lead that was erased by the end of the first half as the Eagles went on a 14-0 run in the final 7:47 to cut the Pack lead to three.

The Eagles never led in the contest but came as close as five points in the second half to really test the ThunderWolves.

Kendall Babler (Sr., Rifle, Colo.) knocked down a deep 3-pointer with less than two minutes remaining in the game to give the Pack a 10-point cushion down the stretch.

Following the win the Pack now have won 11 straight against the Eagles dating back to 2002 when they were defeated on the road.

The Pack will play their final home game of January Satuday night when they play host to Nebraska-Kearney. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
